South Africa team selection

Phehlukwayo does have a better test bowling average than Dale Steyn. :D

But I agree, he has been a bit frustrating as it's always felt like he could be better than he's actually turned out to be.

I like the initiative of the emerging side playing in the b division:

Yeah, but it's got to be the best youngsters in the country playing for SA Emerging otherwise it can have the opposite effect and weaken the cricket system ..

Knights just thrashed SA Emerging by 160 runs today , put up 400 on the board ..

Garnett Tarr hit a monster 192 not out , Dian Forrester had another good all round performance 52 off 28 and 1/26 ..

A strong Lions side were thrashed today by 9 wickets against KZN Inland ..
Wiaan Mulder , Ryan Rickleton , Zubayr Hamza , Joshua Richards and Bjorn Fortuin all part of a Lions side that got bowled out for 90

Right arm fast medium Thando Ntini (2/24 ) , Fast bowler Keith Dudgeon (2/21) and the tall Left Arm medium fast of Mbulelo Budaza (4/18) the destroyers-in-chief with the ball.

Phehlukwayo I understand, but Lizaad Williams ?
That makes absolutely no sense , how do you look at the squad with another chance to improve it and STILL make the same mistake ..

Lizaad Williams has only played 1 ODI game and took 1/62 , he isn't express pace (Used to be quite sharp in his youth before injuries) and he can't bat either , how has Rob Walter and his panel gone yep this is among the best 15 in the country ..

We could have gone for Eathan Bosch or his brother Corbin , another all rounder like Mulder , George Linde ..Really disappointing .

I mean why would you replace a specialist bowler with an allrounder when they've already added andile p.

I`m sorry but honestly my feelings around the squad are meh... its a squad of potentials, that are likely never to fulfil or do anything truly positive.

Politics, bad policy decisions, (and I`m not talking quota itself but implementation thereof) and a failed governing board that has been going for twenty years has destroyed any semblance of a solid structure that makes sense on any level. Largely due to short sightedness and resting on its laurels. (Much like ignoring the FC and Test matches!)

We can compare it to rugby, which has more monies granted, and maybe not some of the difficulties cricket has in easy to play, but has also had many problems and many ups and downs. But has through sevens rugby, woman's game, through intelligent investment, good overall strategic long term planning and from a much more underdeveloped point of view (where the springboks where a symbol of hatred by many) actually managed to get the game to the masses, and produce a team that is representative (not 100% perfect) by doing the necessary and developing and now it just keeps producing a good game; that all participate in and are proud off.

Until the CSA, particularly, cricket associations and clubs largely remove there head from their ass nothing is likely to change. And rugby has already give a pretty good and basic development strategy to follow. The powers that be just need to actually bite the bullet do it and hope the rest of the country does not crumble around it while we wait for the improvements. The failure to use the successes of the 2007-2015, to grow the game in SA is a huge black mark that should never be forgiven.

I don't get the pessimism here, honestly. You guys have a good team, with the best middle order in the world cup while being able to carry 5 genuine bowling options and plenty of guys with professional experience in india.

All of this is despite the administration and selection policies, and the 6 batsmen 5 bowler method may not hold up at the WC, but you guys have a very solid chance of making the semis.

Marco Jansen and Phehlukwayo are more No.8's than No.7's ..so Mulder could have fitted into the team or Corbin Bosch if they wanted a proper all rounder

Lizaad Williams isn't better than Eathan Bosch with the ball , plus hes like 29 years old so no real investment option , Eathan Bosch averages 28 with the bat and is only 25 and recently got made captain of the Dolphins one day side ..

Then if you wanted someone express pace like Nortje. The closest options in the domestic circuit are Daryn Dupavilon , Nandre Burger ..

Lizaad Williams is a disappointing pick , it reeks of laziness..'Oh damn we can't pick Magala or Nortje , lets just give a place to the guy we played in the T20's' ..

I agree, it's quite unlikely but this is a team that could win the thing.

Batting is solid and if the batting fires, we'll be getting 400+.

Ngidi looks like he is getting back to his best form, Maharaj (especially) and Shamsi are bowling well, Rabada is Rabada, and even Coetzee isn't going to disappoint us.

I maybe wouldn't have taken AP and LW but Walter knows something we don't. He didn't decide to have them while having his morning pooh, they've obviously thought this through and looked at stats etc.

Look we have enough quality that if half the squad clicks on a day we can beat anyone. But we are Protea fans,we know how these World Cups usually end. It's a mixture of caution and pessimism.

Lizaad Williams took 1/62 in his only ODI game , he missed the entire CSA One Day Cup last season because of injuries , he only averages 29 with the ball in his List A career and he's a No.10 at best ..
Whatever Walter knows I would love him to share with us .

Look, I'm not getting my hopes up, because as Bane tells Batman, only the man who has hope can feel true despair.

The stats of the Bosches aren't much better though, and neither has played an international match. So, why would you rather take them?

And who cares if he's a No 10, he's getting picked as a bowler. If you're worried about how many runs your 9, 10, and 11 are going to make, you've already lost.

Williams being selected is definitely ****ed, I just wouldn't have picked an allrounder to replace a bowler when they've picked an allrounder to replace the other injured bowler. Would have picked swaenpool or eathan Bosch if I wanted a bit more batting while keeping the bowling.

Cause of the make up of our side ..and I'm not going off just on stats either I know the players I'm advocating to pick and I know Lizaad Williams, and this is a bad pick ..Corbin Bosch averages 39 with the bat at a SR of 103 ..If you had him in the squad you can have Marco Jansen at No.8 and Phehlukwayo as cover , the downside is that Corbin is a bit expensive but he bowls 140+ and I think he raises his game for the big matches from what I've seen ..The other option is Eathan Bosch who averages better than Lizaad Williams with the ball and bowls at a similar speed (135-140) and can bat as he averages 29 ..also when Netherlands toured here earlier this year he was the pick of the bowlers for the Sa invitational side with 3/20 ..And he had a strong One Day Cup last season , was voted the best young player in the SA T20 league ..The idea of having subs on the bench is having options , Lizaad Williams would just be a straight swap for Ngidi where as guys like the Bosch brothers you can play around with combinations even if someone is not injured.
