One Saffie out, another comes in. Carse looked promising in the COVID Pakistan series but hadn't looked good in the Hundred. He's got pace though and his batting has really come on. Doesn't really mean much as a series though.
hmm, perhaps not, but the way our bowlers keep getting injured, anyone around any of the squads could end up in the World Cup squad, Atkinson an unknown at this level, Archer won't be fit and Mark Wood is Mark Wood. They will want at least one Fast bowler.

I think Tongue may get a call-up in the end.

Carse is arse.

Should probably give a mention to Crawley's 158 at better than a run a ball yesterday. It's starting to look like he may have properly turned a corner and the faith placed in him by McCullum is really paying off.

His 70 odd at the Oval was really fluent. It looked that of a very good player. Of course, I was disappointed he didn't ton up because it was far more convincing that his big ton the previous test to that so maybe his now kicking on and will help move his first class career record in the right direction.

I'm currently watching Rehan bowl at Hove - one decent ball early on to get Alsop but nothing else of note in an otherwise fairly bland spell.

Apart from Dawson, has any English spinner had a decent season in the CC? Genuine question, as I really don't know.
Having effectively written off De Caires 15 minutes ago, his last couple of matches might just put him near the top of the pile.

Matty Parkinson has done well on loan at Durham 19@31.00 from his 6 matches.

Looks like he got 6@37 from his one game for Lancs.

But when Dawson has 35@18 and De Caires 23@23 it's not quite as good. Aside from that the cupboard has been very bare, Carson at Sussex averaging 45.

Bess and Moriaty both been out on loan without much to shout about. Don't think Virdi has played, Liam Patterson White much either. Bashir at Somerset too.

The Dawson selection should be an absolute no brainer for India. If we take 3 spinners, it looks increasingly like Leach, Dawson and Rehan. It's possible Jacks may get a call too.

You'd think we'll need an off-spinner too, although Root might do that, I suppose. Jacks has done nothing this summer to merit a recall.

Agreed but don't rule out something funky from the captain and coach when all logic suggests that Dawson should be on the plane.

Yeah, two lefties plus Rehan turning it the same way isn't ideal, especially when we know they love their match ups with the left handers so much.

Agreed Jacks has done nothing to deserve a recall, but that doesn't rule anything out. It's slightly scary that in Div 1, only Harmer and Dawson have more wickets than De Caires (next on the spinners list is Leach and he's not played since May). Carson appears to be the top wicket taker in Div 2 (again you have to go a long way down the list to find the first spinner) and his 24 wickets have come at 45.

I'm starting to think De Caires isn't as daft as first made out.

I thought he was a batter who bowled a bit but that seems to be the opposite now. If there's a lions tour then he's a contender but some way off tests.
Yeah he played as an opener and didn't bowl in his first couple of games. Now he's batting 9 and bowling unchanged for sessions at a time.

For years we discussed the lack of spinning options coming through who might make a reasonable pick. It doesn't help that some are stymied by the lack of remotely friendly conditions given April May & September fc matches but it is what it is.

English spinners basically have to be picked on the eye Test rather than results given this.

That's not ideal but you can make do.

The real problem even beyond that is that conditions are so stacked against them that good spinners don't even get a game a lot of the time. Averaging 40 as an afterthought in harsh conditions is one thing, not playing at all is another.

Been a particularly wet summer this year which makes things worse.

Can't remember who said it now*, but I remember the quote from a player a few seasons back now when asked what advice he had for young spinners who want to succeed in the Championship: "Learn to bat."

You don't get a spot if you can't. Allrounders like Dawson, Critchley and Keogh get more bowling across a county season than most specialists spinners, because they actually get games.

*Edit: may have been Ollie Rayner?
