Bowes, probably not but, Rachin hopefully.

Also, that Macewell spot in the WC is a worry on the evidence I just watched.

I went along. None of Young's catches were at first. Three on the boundary and the other at extra cover.

Lockie bowled poorly and didn't look particularly effective (as his figures will attest). Rachin came back well after going for a few in his first over. Lister looked pretty good, actually.

Batting wise, Phillips played well, and picked his moments nicely. He wasn't just swinging for the rafters. Rachin was, though. Not a T20 batsman just yet.
That's really interesting. We don't want that from Rachin - we don't want to turn a guy with a decent top-order technique into trying to be a biffer. Anyone who says they can adapt roles like that, to go from a biffer to a technically-correct top order player when required, is kidding themselves. He needs to dedicate himself to being Conway's shadow - he can still be a T20 player if he wants, but what you're saying isn't the way to go about it.

Beginning to wonder if either of Chad Bowes or Rachin will ever do anything of use.
Think we've seen a fair body of work to suggest Bowes ain't it. Rachin, you can't squander a guy who has his talent - things like the double hundred for Durham, the FC runs so early in his career, that's something to hold onto. We just need to give him a role that suits his game, and allow him to stick at it. Latham/Conway are 31/32, and Rachin is 23, if we can give Rachin enough opportunities in the next 3-4 years in roles that he is capable of playing, he'll be cherry ripe to go once those guys step away (or if they're injured, or god forbid Conway unavailable for franchises)

I should probably shut up and start my own Rachin rant thread. Apologies.

I would be happy if Rachin never plays T20Is tbh. To some extent we still have this mindset that limited over players should be for both formats, not just specialising in one or the other. I reckon it comes down to finances. Easier to tour with the same or similar 15 man squad than have 20-30 players for a tour.

Someone like Bowes deserved a shot because of Domestic form. What else can you ask of your fringe players? He's had his go, auditioned to be the backup/alternate opener but sadly doesn't seem to be up to chuff. That said, at least he wasn't given 1 or 2 games and discarded either. Some home and away series is enough to get a sense of someones mental and techhnical game.

Yeah, the Macewell thing has completely thrown off the balance of our side, or at least greatly affected it. McConchie is not an international player, they haven't given Foxcroft enough opportunities and Rachin (oh my god here I go again) isn't the guy, either.

So as it stands, we really will have to play 6 batsmen, an all-rounder in Santner, and four bowlers. Just places more onus on the top order to bat for longer periods of time, Phillips to bat long enough to be a finisher, Santner to have a big tournament and contributions from those guys down the order (Henry, Southee, Jamieson if he plays, Sodhi).

It was fairly disappointing to watch, actually. Not that many of them batted that well. Had a definite B team auditioning for the A team vibe to it.

Oh no he deserved to be picked, I'm not criticising him as a person. His List A record is reasonably good. All I'm saying is onto the next guy, if there is one.

I think Phillips bowling offers just enough to cover Bracewell IMHO that we don't need to shoehorn Ravindra into that role
Good point, although he hasn't been bowling. I'd be investing in him over McConchie. I'd also have Chapman playing every game and bowling a bit - I couldn't care less if we lose these games, if you can get a part-time spinner like Phillips or Chapman bowling in helpful subcontinent conditions, it means Santner bats 8 and we have a much sturdier order.

Tongue injured, would be nice to have a young breaktru fast bowler who wasn't made of straw.

edit, i see this is old news, Still the point stands.

From the available squad, what's your preferred XI for the T20 series?

I'd go with:
Allen
Conway+
Phillips
Chapman
Mitchell
McConchie
Santner
Southee
Milne
Sodhi
Ferguson

Loads of bowling but light on batting. Still don't rate Seifert and don't think Ravindra is right for T20 (at least at this stage)

If Neesh hadn't gone home he'd be in the side for McConchie and it'd look more balanced IMHO
