Which club takes him on? As talented as he is, he won't be a popular signing anywhere
Newcastle

Nah, he'll go abroad and play - most clubs abroad won't have an issue as he wouldn't be as well known there anyway and their main concerns will be with the PR backlash. Mendy, for instance, had no trouble finding a club.

Local clubs aren't exactly holier than thou either - Chad Evans played for 4 clubs after serving half his sentence and getting his release. I reckon there'll be clubs who might take him in once it all dies down a bit.

depends on the country

Germany for eg he’ll be booed till death whenever he plays. i dont think it will matter too much in Turkey or Saudi if he goes down that route and in terms of career move those two if they are taking him on would be the best for him to escape the worst atm

Only one of those clubs came before his retrial though. There was absolute bedlam every time a club approached him or expressed an interest at first. But then after he had his conviction quashed and was found not guilty the objections went away. And even when he signed for Chesterfield, by then the conviction had been quashed albeit he hadn’t gone to trial yet.

I don't think it stopped clubs being interested in signing him at any point. And he isn't quite as good a player as Greenwood so I reckon there'd be clubs interested a few years down the line once all this dies down.

They were interested but the backlash put them off and these were clubs much lower down the leagues too

When did it become acceptable to refer to ***The Saudis*** as a kind of evil monolith? Literally one Saudi Arabian person is like ‘we don’t approve of domestic abuse’ and the football world is like ‘those ****ing hypocrites’.

I think this sort of casual racism (because I guess that's kind of what what it is) often gets a pass in sporting contexts.

I remember it always used to bother me how commentators would usually always just refer to other most other nations as their name (e.g. "That was a lovely attacking move by Spain"), but whenever England were playing someone like Argentina they would be referred to as "The Argentines" (with added snide tone).

Can remember similar things happening with Sven during his tenure as England manager too.

When things were going well, and everyone was in a fairly good mood (so, from the 5-1 up to around the end of Euro 2004 I guess), all the MotD pundits would chummily refer to him as "Sven".

But when things became a stodge around the 2006 WC they all suddenly just started calling him "Erikson".

Edit: Tbf this one may not have had anything to do with Sven's nationality, I seem to remember similar things happening with McClaren and Hodgson, but it's a useful example how a slight change in terminology/language re: how people are addressed can have a notable insidious effect when it comes to discrediting their competency/treating people with respect imo.

I must've missed the bit where England was doing well under Dutch Schteve.

Well that was a nice week off. Seems there are some sensitive people around here but nonetheless lesson has been learnt - apologies to anyone offended by the farmers league convo and/or Shearer chat. Bit of a shame no one engaged when there was rational arguments with evidence put forward, but I digress..

Moving right along, it's been interesting reading back over United fans coming to grips with the imbalance of their team. Going to be a long season for them unless dramatic action is taken in the market. All the hallmarks of what Liverpool were doing last season, vacating the midfield and leaving Casemiro to fire fight on his own - the guy is a great player but he will never be able to do that job by himself. Mount injury abit of a blessing in disguise in terms of player profile they'll be able to put into cover him and it should cool the heat around his signing from United fans. Antony is well on his way to being one of the biggest flop signings of all time, I don't get him at all.

As an LFC fan, I'm relatively happy with how we look but there is still work to be done on the market. Szoboslai is definitely class, been impressed by him and he could well be one of the very top midfielders in the league in a few months. Endo is a weird signing but seems a short term solution and Klopp is an admirer, so have to trust it for now. Mac Allister is going to be a steady hand and reliable while Diaz has also started on fire.

Still some big concerns I have regarding the defence and overall system. One centre-back injury away from disaster, Matip and Gomez are not at the level anymore unfortunately. It is also not immediately obvious what the plan would be if TAA is out for any extended period.

Think I would be really concerned if I was a Fulham fan, I watched them on the weekend and they look awful. Mitrovic gone now, Silva unhappy, they have relegation written all over them unless something drastically changes.

I think Casemiro hasn't really played well in a while in my view. It feels like he takes too much time on the ball and has also strayed too far forward at times, which is somewhat mystifying. Having said that, some of it is physical as well since he gets dribbled past a little too easily at the moment. I'm not sure what the reason for it is and whether it's age catching up on him or just him a bit of a slow starter to the season (he wasn't great in the first few games last season either).

I'm not sure I completely buy into the 4-1-4-1 kind of setup that ETH likes to go with these days considering the quality/suitability of players he has available in the key "1" positions. He needs to tweak things tactically as well or we'll continue to get overrun. The Mount injury potentially forces his hand, but my thinking is he could potentially go with Hannibal if he really doesn't want to change his system.

Antony is a frustrating player to watch, a little bit like how Nani was, but I'm one of very few people not ready to write him off just yet. I think if he gets a bit more accurate with his left foot, it will make a world of difference on his impact. Off the ball, he is fine.

On the positive side, I like Onana and the benefits of having him in the team are clear over what we saw with De Gea. There'll be the occasional mishap, but the positives in our general play just about outweigh that I think.
