2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Eh, they've made women's football relevant here. Not against this at all tbh
lol

If Suncorp erected a statue for every top 3 athlete from Queensland, there’d be no seats in the joint

More importantly, Australia doesn’t have the population or money to make local football relevant & a statue won’t change that

The ‘74 Socceroos were far more important to the game in this country than the Matildas

I mean, all due respect and all, but it was very clearly the 2002 WC and the cunning relocation to Asia that really got the round ball rolling.

Pretty sure yer Socceroos haven't missed a WC since then whereas after 74 they had to wait until (hey!) 2002 for another go.

Yeah, I could try and claim i meant the near miss in 02 qualifying (lost on agg to U-r-guay after winning the first leg, IIRC) had a galvanising effect and set Oz on the path to reversing the result four years later, but that'd be cobblers; I was simply a world cup out.

Ah yes, that famous team who *googles notes* famously didn't score a goal at the world cup.
Team was comprised of part timers and amateurs and only 16 teams qualified for the finals

Teams who didn’t qualify included England, France, Spain, Uruguay (whom we beat), South Korea (see Uruguay), etc

It was a monumental achievement as evidenced by the fact that we didn’t qualify again for another 32 years

great achievement sure, but the 32 year gap might suggest it didn't exactly set a light under the game.

Tbf, participation rates have never been an issue in Australia

The Matildas success will probably result in a few more girls playing the game but it won’t alleviate the issues facing the local professional game

All sorts of **** going down in Spain since the final, when the president of the Spanish FA kissed one of the players, Jenni Hermoso, on the lips during the medal ceremony. He was expected to resign but gave an extraordinary speech at a general meeting of the the association, saying "I won't resign!" over and over. The Government and FIFA are starting investigations into him and having started the tournament with 15 players refusing to play because of the coach, that number has now grown to 81!

At the very least what he did must be gross misconduct and an instafire?

I mean, if the kiss wasn't welcome (and judging by the furore I'm guessing it wasn't), isn't it sexual assault?
Very much non-consensual, according to this statement:

BARNES OUT
Geez I'm just so shocked that the president of the Spanish FA is such a horrid little man. He should take a leaf from the head of La Liga, and noted *checks notes* fascist, *tugs collar* Javier Tebas.
