Yeah it's definitely the goalscorer to blame, not the fullbacks who shipped two by not tracking runners
Yeah they cost themselves a shot at it with those lapses. Kennedy’s absence was costly but no excuses, Aus had plenty of chances, especially in the second half.

3-1 a bit of a harsh scoreline but you’re likely to concede a third when chasing it like they were.

Was a great spectacle. Waxed and waned. Brilliant stuff from all concerned. Kerr’s goal was one for the ages. Won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

I want to see social try to score that. 95% chance he'd fail to make contact with the ball.

Footy thread regulars will know that non-footballers thinking headed chances are easy is a gear-grinder for me.
Bright's free header from the corner when she's facing the goal too was a significantly easier chance than the Kerr flick.

yeah whoever said it before, lucy bronze just amazing every time she touched the ball tonight.

think i would be more inclined to agree with social's point if it was framed as "you need your marquee player (arguably best in the world) to score those goals in these situations with a world cup on the line" rather than "those chances were auto kick". obviously a lot more was wrong than that as re what the tillies served up tonight but huge credit has to go to england for the way they were so consistently able to control ball and eat clock, simultaneously suffocate the tillies skill players on defense while pushing up and creating chances with the ball. had kerr put a couple of those into the back of the net it might have ended differently, but the other and probably clearer counterfactual is the lionesses probably should have been up 4-0 on us by the half. much as i hate admitting it the better team on the night won!

Raso and Foord really were terrible (beyond Bronze and Greenwood putting out exceptional performances). It was jarring just how immediately more dangerous the team looked down that right hand side as soon as Vine came on and actually running at defenders rather than ignoring Carpenter's runs and/or overhitting passes.

Footballs coming home

hard lines Australia , just beaten by the better team today with quality finishing

and England were 4 of their top players not available through injury and suspension

In last year's European Championships, Spain actually gave England the hardest game and were unlucky not to win that game. Therefore, this will be a toughie and it remains to be seen how much nerves will play a part.

The bookies have it completely 50/50 and I wouldn't disagree. Spain were without their best player in last years Euros and you could argue that England are without 2 of theirs now.

The interesting thing are the two coaches. England have a coach that the players admire and would run through fire for, Spain have a coach the players hate and wanted to see fired. You wonder if it gets tight towards the end whether this might be a factor.

How many Spain players left at home would make their xi?
I know 3 of the 15 he banned came back into the sqaud before the tournament but is their any others that would be first choice?

No, all the key players returned to the fold, doesn't mean they like him. Putellas made that clear when substituted in the semi.

Kirby, mead, Williamson?
Mead and Williamson. I don't think Kirby would get the nod ahead of either James or Toone now.

FIFA's boss, the guy who looks like The Hood and whose name translates as childish **** (maybe), somehow managing to make FIFA even less likeable.
