*Official* Road to World Cup 2023

Norwood's on Fire
Not too long to go, so surely time to get this started? Apologies if there is one floating around - I couldn't find any when i searched

Key questions for me

How will England's title defence go?
Now that there will be another World Cup in memory, will everyone stop crying about the last one?
How will Ind V Pak go?
When will we get a subforum?
And I suppose - who will win?

Key questions

How will England's title defence go?
2nd (or 3rd) favourites behind Australia, so should easily make the semis. After that it's anyone's game.

Now that there will be another World Cup in memory, will everyone stop crying about the last one? Most will stop

How will Ind V Pak go? It'll be wild. Pressure will be intense with 120,000 spectators cheering on.

When will we get a subforum? Like 5 days before the World Cup starts, so 1st of October? All good things are left till the last minute on CW.

And I suppose - who will win? Australia or India

England, India, Australia and Pakistan to make the semi finals. Anyone’s from that point on. The format militates against upsets before the semi final stage and I can’t see another team being consistent enough, although New Zealand are perhaps the most likely.

Australia's preliminary World Cup squad: Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
Lol Marnus getting dropped for that slow 5th test ashes innings I see. But honestly don’t think his game is that well suited for the shorter formats

No shortage of all rounders in that squad, although seems like it's a batsman or two short.
A lot of Australia's best ODI batsmen happen to be all rounders so I could see why it would look like that

Marsh, Maxwell, Stoinis & Green are all there for their batting, but just happen to be all rounders. Hardie probably in that group as well. I can't think of any specialist batsmen we have in domestic that would be better bats than any of them. Marnus isnt

That they have several such "batsmen" who can bowl just as well -provides a huge advantage to Australia in this World Cup.

Daniel Hughes has consistently put up great numbers in the 1-day format. However he'd have to open (which is taken really) and his time has come and gone I would imagine. Otherwise the squad really picked itself

Yeah Hughes, much like Khawaja, has been a victim of the Warner/Finch combo being so cemented in.

if Stoinis is good enough with his batting then how bad are the rest of them lol he doesn’t even have a 50 in years

I'm a fan of the concept but it shouldn't get you selected to play cricket when you're not good enough

I'm surprised whenever he plays a List A game and doesn't ton up these days.

At this rate, surely Stoinis is a vibes-based selection. I rate him though, I'm sure he'll come good at some point during the WC.

Would be great to have an actual spare batsman in the squad instead of Stoinis.

I like Hardie but I'm not sure what the point of him is either. Doesn't justify getting picked on batting or bowling alone and we absolutely don't need another batting allrounder in the side.
