Tendulkar has 157 games over nearly two decades with an average of 59 over a stretch of high quality bowling standards, an unparalleled case of longevity and maintaining quality, and averaged 45 or above everywhere. This is his biggest case, aside from being technically near perfect.
And his home away record

His 4th innings record

Remove minnows and the average difference for Viv doesn't look as bad.
Thats not the only reason people rate them above Viv, myself included.

Besides Sobers averages actually improves to 62, Smith and Hobbs still average above 55 - and Sachin’s drops to what, 51? Still doesn’t look great.

And the others, aside from Sachin, still dominate him.

And again, there are plenty of other factors besides pure average as to why people rate him behind them.
Yet Sachin is considered by many the best after Bradman. So Viv should be in the conversation. Best of his era like the rest.

Again Viv has the best short term peak of any batsmen bat Bradman. Sobers has a better long term peak. But Richards dominated more ATG bowlers than anyone in history. Richards batted in the toughest era to bat post WW-2. He has a perfect home away record. He has a perfect record across all 4 innings. The only problem is that he didn’t have a second peak as good as Lara or Tendulkar, and that is because he didn’t get to minnow bash at all. Viv is the most destructive batsmen in test history and his capability to flip the match over in a session is unmatched. Also certain intangibles like his impact upon the bowler’s mental state and his aura cannot be captured through stats. Viv may not have as high a average as Sobers, and may not have the same consistency but he is batted in a tougher era, was more destructive, dominated more ATG bowlers, has a better home away record, and the intangibles associated with him that Sobers doesn’t. It’s very marginal tho. But to pretend Sobers is clearly ahead is naive.

Hmm? Source? Lara, Sachin, Gavaskar and few others did more. He never played against the best bowling attacks of his time.
