English Domestic Season 2023

Great for Essex to get an away win against the old Lancastrian foe. Whenever Essex play against Lancashire these days, rather than memories of the scraps in the 90s, I now tend to think about cpr and the banter we would have on occasions when the two teams played - particularly his poem about the One Day Cup game where Lancashire rolled Essex for bugger all. One of the best, cpr. I miss his presence here.

The early season washout between Surrey and Essex when Essex were in a winning position may be decisive.
Essex have to play Hampshire twice yet. Might have a bit to do with things aswell. Both have to play Middlesex and Northants, weather could impact again on either side when playing the bottom sides.

Minority interest I know, but both Berkshire CCC and Cumbria CCC have won their semi finals today which means that they will both be in their fourth consecutive NCCA Trophy final on 27th August at Sir Paul Getty's ground at Wormsley. Berkshire have won the last three finals. Time for change.

Impressive that. You would have hoped that Cumbria will actually win it
Gotta hope, for sure. But it's a bit David v Goliath. Every match we play we have one current or ex FC counties player but often face three or more with first class experience.

But there are 18 other counties who have wanted to be in each of those four finals.

I’m a couple of days behind on the news however the One Day Cup now has a sponsor. Quite possibly bunged in for free along with ODI sponsorship but a sponsor nonetheless.

news to me, but fairly sure in the last days of the Royal London sponsorship it was often not called the Royal London Cup. Do they like to keep things quiet? Across the board one day cricket men and women:

"13th July 2023
Following the recent announcement that it will become the first ever Champion of Women’s and Girls’ Cricket, Metro Bank and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today announce that Metro Bank will become Official Title Partner for One Day Cricket."

Lancashire website not caught on yet, but the BBC have.

I guess the ECB can't announce anything in case it competes with their franchise competition, they wouldn't want anyone realising there is more cricket being played at the same time.

What's going on at Worcestershire?
Brown to Derbyshire after Tongue and Pennington to Notts. Morris retired.
All that after losing Barnard and Moeen at the end of last season.

Someone (I think George Dobell) was posting about it on Twitter and saying it wasn't even really a money thing, but more about seamers wanting to play somewhere a bit more seam friendly.

But there's been lots of noise about backroom disfunction in general

Lots of issues. The Pitch isn't great. Brown was offered a contract for just T20/50 over and he wants to play in the County Championship which Derbyshire offered. Worcestershire have lost a lot of money due to covid/floods etc and don't have the money that they did in the late 80s and early 90s when we won stuff. I feel this is going to start a new era in county cricket and a lot of players will go to bigger countries.

been happening in bits and pieces over the years. To the bigger counties i.e. to franchise grounds (except Wales?) I try and track these movements, normally between 20 and 30 each off-season, but not normally from Worcestershire.

Indeed, from the outside, Worcestershire have often punched above their weight in the last 15 years or so compared to counties with similarly small resources. Pity if there is indeed some internal discontent as weeman implied.
Connected point - will not Notts now have a surplus of seam bowlers?

We haven't really. We have won 2 trophies in that period (National League 2007, T20 Blast 2018) . and only survived in the top flight of the CC twice

Pretty sure Jake Ball is not a first choice for them in four-day cricket, so the fact that he's been playing in the CC would suggest they're short. Stone has predictably been injured. Fletcher has been out most of the season too. Hutton has done well but is not exactly lightning pace. Not sure if Dane Paterson is committed to staying long term?

Four seasons in division one since 2008 is better than Northants (3), Glos & Derbys (1) and Leics & Glam (0). These numbers do though emphasise the existing divide.
