To commence a two-match Dev series hosted by AXI against AX–W, pinch-hitter James Mortimer pulled one out of the hat, scoring a remarkable 128 (76) punctuated by eight sixes. A characteristically adept performance from the home team's top order brought them to 252, but it proved well insufficient thanks to Mortimer's innings, and able assistance from Mark Hurst. The series will culminate with the next CWC9 fixture.
In the second match of the series, it was leveled thanks to an excellent 128* (78) from Ibrahim Zahid chasing a meagre total of 186 against a poorer bowling attack. Brought into the XI at late notice, Mortimer again impressed, the only light in the AX–W batting innings with 66 (53). It's all set up for the series final.

  • briefly enter the world top 5
well that was easy

This was thanks to the Velociraptors beating Legend Killers, in classic Dino fashion:

Their #11 can't even bat, for once.

So, for one day at least, a team that bats 1689417489462.png <--- that guy, as a specialist bat, a T20 opener and OD #4, is in the top five in the world. Yay for Rustydom!

But all good things must come to an end, as AXI have enlisted the long-term SA national bat Mncwabe to replace him. Decent substitute, I think.

AXI won the Dev series 2–1, in the end. Another Zahid century brought them home, despite excellent finishing from Sheikh and Picton. Both teams have proved their strength, but have been very reliant on 21-year-olds.

To compensate, AX–W got off to a strong start in the ensuing T20 series, winning the first game by 3 wickets. AXI's top-heavy lineup didn't fire completely, and to compensate for an expensive final over (he has been bowling the final over in a bunch of games in an experiment), Murdoch scored 57 (29) to lead his new team to a win.

Season 34 goals:
  • Promote in one senior format
  • Remain in DEV 1.1
AX–W season 34 review:

Both points were accomplished, if only by the skins of teeth. The affiliate was perfectly middling in Dev 1.1, an encouraging sign. Afzaal ul-Haq was whopping – the division's leading run scorer, comfortably. He was also the youngest player in the top 10; not bad stuff from a supposedly late bloomer. No other player in the team managed half his runs. The bowling was expensive, due to some quite high-scoring matches.

The T20 was an inglorious 3rd, losing 4 games to the teams above us. A last-over one-wicket underdog victory in the OD brought a strong 2nd place, just good enough to earn promotion to replace a botted team. There it was Govind Shinjinee who dominated, mostly bot-bashes.

Player of the season: it was tight but Mark Hurst edged Tye Ramsbottom, going from fringe player to consistently one of the club's best batters, up top, and surprisingly high BQ for his leggies.

Seasonal aims:
  • Remain in a SOD 2.3 marked by having two halves of teams in terms of quality, AX–W at the high end of the weaker half
  • Promote out of T20 3.1 (unfortunately a long shot)
  • Remain in DEV 1.1, seeing out a glut of firings to happen some time soon – particularly of older Dev players
