The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

No he isnt. Compton was rated on par with him despite lower stats. Reason being Barrington’s defensive mindset that used to lead england to draws from either wins or losses. His playstyle was boring to watch and atg teams dont require just strength but match winners too
Compton is an overrated hack who averaged 37 away from home. Its like putting Warner in the ATG Aussie XI if you only saw him bat in Australia.

While it may not be representative as the coverage is incomplete, Charles Davis' data shows that Barrington's strike rate was 41, and Compton's was... 41.

the info i provided was based on articles
3 years back when trying to explore his career, so thank you for that bit of knowledge, my deductions may be wrong then

Before his football-related knee injury became chronic in 1949, Compton was averaging 61 in Tests (50 away from home) and had scored 20,737 runs in first-class cricket, average 60.99, with 74 hundreds.

His game was based on a keen eye, improvisation and very fast footwork. Without the fast footwork he was not the same player and became more defensive and inconsistent, especially after a night on the town.

When folk who saw him rave about Compton they are usually referring to the Compton of the 1940s. His only real weakness then was running between the wickets.

Perhaps it isn’t as bad as the overall numbers suggest.

Still, pre chronic injury he averaged 65/50 home/away (over 25/11 matches), and post chronic injury he still somehow managed 54 at home compared to 29 away (22 and 20 matches).

Thought about Lindwall over Lillee but went with Lillee in the end. Cummins potentially to force him out by the end of his career.

It may be tough to beat any team with Bradman in it...

But this team can put up a pretty decent fight with yours IMO

ATG teams are the most enjoyable thought exercise in all sports. Esp cricket.

It's why we pour over past players, memories and stats to argue with some folk half a world away over the merits of an truly irrelevant point as all this is pure hypothetical. I would have it no other way. :D

AT Aus from the modern era only (post covered wickets ~ 1970).

Hayden
Warner
Ponting
Smith
G. Chappell
Border *
Gilchrist +
Warne
Lillee
Thomson
McGrath

In absolute terms (ie truly AT) obviously Bradman et al would get in (Miller, Morris etc). I continue to believe that no fair comparison can be made across the pre cw/post cw era.

In any case this would still be the greatest side ever (with the possible exception of AT WI [same caveat applied]).

Again, truly AT obvs Sobers, Headley, Worrell wrc would make it. But in the modern era that is a stupidly strong side.

I tend to consider cricket’s modern era from 90s.

90s was a revolutionary era historically really, with the entertainment industry hitting a boom. Pop music, gaming consoles, airlines, those family shows etc becoming more accessible to the common man due to modernisation.

i reckon we should use the 90s for making post and pre’s imo. Just my 2 cents 🤷‍♀️
