Why are Bradman and Sobers opening?
Bradman or Ponting or some other opening is often talked about as an option for Aus ATG teams, because they've had so many great middle order batsmen compared to openers. It could be argued the team is stronger by getting a middle order bat to open and include an extra one than pick 2 actual openers out of Hayden, Simpson, Ponsford or whoever

Bradman definitely faced fast bowlers
How fast do you think Larwood was. From what I have seen not more than 145 kph. Great but not express pace.

even if you’re applying all the filters and **** and factors and compensation Bradman would average what, 70? that’s still the best in test history by a big margin

just admit that the guy was a statistical freak, his achievements compared to contemporaries and players across time are freakish even compared to others sports icons
I have already said that Bradman is the best bat by a mile just because I did some speculation about his abnormal stats doesn't mean I'm trying to discredit his achievements.

Huh, and here I though Bodyline was all about the spin.
You really think bodyline bowlers were in the league of Thomson or Akhtar?

No Ponting?

145kph is extremely quick.

Starc's one of the fastest bowlers around now, and he clocks, what, 141? Which is probably inflated up from 138? 145 is quick.

No. Root, Barrington, and Compton are all easily superior picks and the batting lineup already has four locks in Hobbs–Sutcliffe–Hutton–Hammond. And there's a case for an all-rounder at 6 too.
How is Sutcliffe locked when Hobbs and Hutton are already there?

Is Pietersen really worthy of an ATG XI spot? Ehhhhh
Now that I think of it.

Hobbs (c)
Hutton
Hammond
Root
Barrington
Botham
Flintoff
Knott (+)
Laker/Barnes
Trueman
Anderson/Statham

Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Hutton
Hammond
Root
Barrington

is by far preferable to

Hobbs
Hutton
Hammond
Root
Barrington
Compton

Sutcliffe is at worst slightly inferior to Hutton as Hobbs' opening partner; Hobbs and Sutcliffe averaged an 88-run opening stand ffs.

And Hutton is much superior to Compton, or Pietersen, or any Pom south of Hammond if he were forced to bat in the middle order. Important to note that the difference between opening and batting cushy lower in the order was much less pronounced back in the 50s.

Barrington was better than Hammond or Hutton as a middle order bat.

I’m sure Hobbs would be surprised to captain his first test for England as a member of this team.
Captaining is not that much of a big deal when you already have a great team.
