Does anyone know the story of CE McLeod, australian test cricketer during the 1890's. ?

What about AE Hopkins, who played 3 tests for Australia on the famous 1902 tour of England ?

Been reading a bit of history and had never heard of these blokes before.

McLeod is most famous for walking off a no-ball and getting run out, due to being deaf.

Hopkins (AJH) dismissed Fry and Ranji for ducks in one of the rain-ruined Tests in 1902.

And that’s all I know about them.

Hopkins and McLeod were decent all-rounders during a period when Australia were strong. Their opportunities were limited.

Bert Hopkins was an early exponent of swerve. Out-swerve breaking from the off like Noble. He was a brilliant fielder which helped get him into the side.

Charlie McLeod was rather a dour cricketer, a slow batsman and medium-pace bowler described as "persistent". His deafness has been noted here. He was one of seven cricketing brothers who all played for the Melbourne club. Three also represented Victoria, and Charlie and Bob played for Australia.

Came across this player when I was looking at Clive Lloyd's last test match. Bob Holland took a 10-fer, won MoM, and played a big role in inflicting an innings defeat on an ATG team. Never heard of him though.

But he also seems to have scored 35 runs in 11 tests, which Seems impressively low to me.

Holland was a bit of a cult hero, he was 38 when he debuted and was in and out of the Test team for a bit over a year before being cast aside for good. His raw figures are unimpressive - 34 wickets at 39 in 11 Tests.

But I prefer to look at it this way. Between March 1984 and December 1986 Australia played 32 Tests and won just three of them - and it was Bob Holland who bowled Australia to victory in all three.
