Will this be the end of International Cricket?

I can't watch most cricket that's a significantly lower standard than the men's international game, whether it's List A, Associate, or one of the bottom tier franchise leagues. The U19 WC and IPL/PSL are borderline. Women's cricket falls somewhere on the lower end of that list.

The men's international game is in fantastic health right now. There's a good balance between bat and ball in tests. Lots of great, classy batsman around as well as multiple unprecedented pace bowling depth across the world. He'll, we've got an unusually high number of left armers and all rounders going around at the moment. Most series are very competitive. What has happened to ODI cricket has been unfortunate but the last WC was cracking and I'm absolutely certain this one will be too as half the teams look well placed to win it.
I agree men's internationals are great atm but have you played sport yourself?

Your view is kinda popular on the internet but doesn't really translate to irl. I knew ages ago I'd rather watch a good game than the best play a bad game.

Club sport, provincial sport and international sport all get big turnouts in various sports because connection and a fun game win out over the world's 20-40 best athletes if they play a borefest.

Plus I've long held the view some of the nz 1930s test bowlers ive seen on youtube are fortunate never to bowl to Sophie Devine.

I hate agree with Trundler but he's right on this one

Go around a cricket club and you will not find many at all who are willing to watch a standard of cricket lower than men's first-class or premier cricket first-grade at the least. Unless there's a proper personal connection to the team playing

That's a cricket club. Rugby clubs here, especially rural ones, get hundreds to a game.

I was at a Test at Trent Bridge 2 years ago, during a rain break they put a live women's match on the big screen. There was a load of groaning in the seats near me which prompted a few discussions.

My local ground has recently been upgraded and will be hosting a Women's T20 game next week in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Quite a few England players on show (Wyatt, Capsey, Dunkley, Bell, Dean, Bouchier etc). A great opportunity to watch some high quality cricket, I'll be heading up there if work allows (2.30pm start seems ridiculous).

The IPL is so damn long , it can make you question the purpose of it all when it's the only thing on the telly .
T20 tournaments generally are too long, as were odi tournaments beforehand. The format is meant to be short and sharp, when too many matches are seen in sequence its formulaic nature becomes more apparent. It works best as a lighthearted frivolity to leven the more serious business of first class cricket.
In the English context I think we got the format right at the start - a two week midsummer festival followed by finals day. Five weeks of T20 and four of the hundred is too much.

Yep, couldn't agree more tbh. The quality of the game I'm watching often becomes secondary to the competitiveness of the two team involved. There's a reason stuff like american college football and march madness attracts such immense viewership numbers despite the quality being nowhere near NBA/NFL level.

I’m reminded of the time my school actually chartered the ****ing MRT (metro/subway) to bring everyone to a rugby final lol.

My interest in cricket is at its lowest with little chance It will improve . The last home season tests in Pakistan was the last straw . It was shocking to see some pretty talented bowlers with decent potential were willing to skip the tests to rest their niggles, get married and play the big bash while Pakistani was fielding a school XI bowing attack in a big home series vs England.

I think this is why I've never been able to get into the NBA. You score, we score etc etc then we do it all again tomorrow. What should be seen as superb skill becomes the norm and the fact it's on so often makes it dull and predictable.

But as test fans we would probably all prefer longer series being the norm, rather than 2-test ones. I think the regular season in basketball has been devalued of late. From a sporting angle, it'd probably make sense to cut 20 games, but not financially. The playoffs are a different beast though.

I'd probably be ok to accept these 12-month franchise contracts if it meant the IPL was played over 6-9 months, with just the same 8/10/12 etc franchisees. Hell, even run part of it in the Caribbean and another in South Africa. I can also accept that necessary financial "evil" of those two cricketing nations tying their own tournaments to the bigger IPL franchises.

However, what I fear will happen is a nightmare of players being signed up to their oligarch/sheikh of choice but playing in 3-4 competitions in 3-4 different squads. No context and I'd imagine outside the IPL, minimal supporter base.
