The thing about Bazball is that you have to be a serious cricketer (and we’re talking about Viv or Gilly levels) to be consistently successful against real quality

The best T20 hitters in the world are successful less than 1 in 3 innings

Good luck running down the pitch against Cummins in front of a full Ashes house with the English press baying for blood after the team has been rolled in 3 days in the prior test

You might see guys standing outside the crease, but it's generally only Stokes who runs down the pitch, and we've only got him down for 20 or so anyway.

Also Pope during the first 20 balls of his innings. If he gets through that he starts batting normally (big IF mind).

It's more if there's any width or half volleys, they are going to get the full treatment rather than the old Sibley days of being left alone.

Headingley and 2 back to back Border Gavaskar series prove attacking this Australian attack has its merits. They're prime candidates for shitting themselves against Bazball.

Anyway, looks like a certain Steve Smith will bat at 5 for Sussex (below Pujara), although not immediately as they've opted to field at Worcs.

Available to watch on the stream, will be interesting to see if he's pulled a crowd.

Headingley is only famous because of an umpiring error

Would only be remembered as a gallant & failed chase otherwise

India didn’t attack Australia

Simply played well

Rishabh Pant didn't attack Australia? When you put Australia, particularly Cummins and Lyon, under the pump, they crack. People said Bazball wouldn't work against a quality attack before the SA series last year and SA's attack is much better at handling aggressive batsmen given they're much better white ball players overall. Cummins is going to get Southee'd if the Dukes are like last year's.

lol

Pant is an attacking cricketer

Pujara isn’t & he played a big role

Cummins is light years better than Southee

Harry Brook has been dropped in the IPL because 1 in 5 don’t cut it

Stats rarely lie

Yeah it's a way to stem the flow of runs without setting fields for bad bowling.
They literally set the field for bad bowling as it ensured that a wide half volley went for 1 not 4

It was designed to stop Hayden pounding them and it worked so kudos

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
Partly

It was mainly to ensure that boundary hitters like Hayden got frustrated
Yeah, I am sure there never was any third man or fine leg before 2000 in tests.

Seriously though, I recall teams often starting without a third man but those would be when they had only one boundary rider. Every time they felt the need for a second boundary rider, it was always the third man.

Did it really work though? Or was it just a case of South Africa's batting not being good enough to handle the English attack?

It was literally a tactic to frustrate Hayden and others

It worked & was very smart

England completely outsmarted Australia in 2005

They were up against a far superior opponent and used every tool at their disposal to win

Kudos to them

Having boundary riders won them the second test in 05.

That and ball tampering, obviously

Aussies brought a spoon to a gun fight. Should have known that no holds barred cheating was on the table
