English Domestic Season 2023

Harry Podmore seems to be at Glamorgan - a loan or permanent? Not sure why he fell out of his favour. I thought he'd done pretty well at Kent.

Sam Hain in the runs again. Probably doesn't matter how many FC runs he scores. I suspect a full England cap will elude him.

Speaking as a Kent supporter, I agree that Harry Podmore did well for us - he was capped in 2019 - but over the last two seasons he had suffered a series of injuries and, when he did play (even in the seconds) he didn't look like the bowler he had been. From memory he had one more year (2023) left on his contract, but Glamorgan came calling and we released him. I hope a new start will help him regain the form he showed for us before his injuries.

I was watching Notts v Somerset. What should've been bowler friendly conditions were largely wasted by Somerset and Duckett helped himself to 75. Hameed far less fluent but going ok now, his strike rate tells you why he wouldn't be considered for England.
Hameeds been playing a lot more attacking since last year. Bats 3 in the one day stuff and give it a tap

Yeah, to be fair he was trying, just couldn't get bat on ball. Think his first run was off his 29th ball. I wonder if that first session will come back to haunt Somerset. That they took 10 wickets in the afternoon probably shows what they should've been doing in the morning.

Not sure how much cricket we'll see anywhere today, it's grim out there.

Ah, didn't realise he'd moved on permanently. McKerr has a reasonable FC record, but a two-game loan isn't going to do much. The Kent bowling does look incredibly light. It's going to be a tough season.

Yes indeed - we are basing a lot on Gilchrist (who started the season with a slight (I hope) injury, and a putative overseas fast bowler signing, but several 'deals' have fallen through due to injuries or the refusal of a NOC. Our other overseas is Linda, a spinner, who is on paternity leave (but probably wouldn't add much at this point of the season). McKerr, who played briefly for us last season, is a sticking plaster - a welcome addition but short term only!

Day 2 has already been abandoned at Bristol already, about 90 minutes before any play would have started.
Could well be a complete washout.

de Grandhomme gave away 5 penalty runs for throwing the ball back towards the keeper at the end of an over yesterday, only problem was Critchley stood directly in between them, hence the penalty for throwing the ball back at the batsman.
Anyone know what the the rules say? New rules in the championship? Umpires call? Does he face a ban? It's not the same in the National Counties who have been told:
"Throwing the ball at Batters:

I have spoken to most of the Head Coaches about the new guidance that has been given to the umpires ahead of this season. Having attended the umpire’s seminar a few weeks ago, the message delivered was very clear, if a bowler fielding the ball off their own bowling, throws the ball back at the stumps (at the batter’s end), when the batter isn’t looking to run, it will be deemed inappropriate and dangerous.
The result of this will be an on-field Level 2 – this carries a 2 match ban."

And Kent have announced an overseas fast bowler - Wes Agar; I expect he'll suffer an injury of some sort before too long!

Could recovery by Durham this morning. A collapse was looking likely near the close of play yesterday but Raine & Coughlin helped post a decent total.

Just back from The Oval, still waiting for my extremities to thaw out. On the face of it, twas madness to go today when the forecast is so much better for the weekend, but my friends had taken the day off work so we gave it a go and were rewarded with about three hours' play. Horrible conditions for anyone who isn't called Mohamad Abbas, who bowled beautifully for his two wickets. Burns actually batted pretty well and it was a surprise when he edged behind. Vince took an absolute screamer off Ryan Patel; quite astonishing given the temperature out there. The interesting decision of the day was to promote Jordan Clark to number 5 when Patel was dismissed, and we wondered if the idea was to send him as a sort of night watchman before the rain or bad light ended play early. That didn't quite happen, and Clark was dismissed cheaply, but Jamie Smith looked fine anyway. Pope started skittishly, as is his wont nowadays, but settled in the bat tidily for his unbeaten 48. We started taking bets on which ball of the over would see him a third of the way down the wicket as it all seemed pretty random. But his innings became increasingly controlled, which was good to see,

Not a hugely encouraging FC record but better than nothing. Is it completely impossible to sign an overseas player for the whole CC season, rather than constant chop-and-changing?

It's very difficult to sign one for a whole season if they are an active international player or a white ball specialist . Kent signed George Linde for 2 seasons at the start of 2022 - he missed part of last season with an injury, and hasn't yet arrived for this season as he is on paternity leave; his form, when here, was indifferent. Kent also signed three fast bowlers last season ( Henry, Duffy & Saini) on very short contracts. Each played a significant part in winning at least one CC match - so well worth signing them.

Half of Sunday's National Counties T20 fixtures already cancelled.
Still four hoping to play:
Cheshire v Northumberland at Sale CC
Staffs v Cumbria at Moddershall & Oulton CC
Dorset v Herefordshire at Sherborne School
Oxfordshire v Buckinghamshire at Wormsley (after a last minute change of venue)
All should be T20 double headers (11am and 2.30pm) and dependent upon wifi live streamed.

At some point, Surrey vs Hampshire could come down to how brave Vince is feeling about a declaration. Unless Surrey bowl them out, my guess is that Hampshire will declare late-morning tomorrow when they're 300 ahead.

Abbas has been seaming them in miles every time I've seen him. Regardless of what point in the innings he's bowled. He's just perfect for these conditions.

Gloucestershire v Yorkshire now abandoned without a ball bowled.
Both teams get 8 pts for the abandonement.

Thats the equivalent of scoring 450 runs (5 bonus points) & taking 9-10 wkts (3 bonus points) in 110 overs,(Extremely difficult to do) and losing the match.

I reckon 8 points is too many for a complete washout, maybe 5 at best, wouldn't be surprised if either side gets promoted by less than 8 points, that a county will complain if they miss out.

Had the match lasted just 5 overs, and been abandoned after the second day, they would have got 5 points for a draw.
