I distinctly remember radio comms talking about Wagner as a potential 145kph bowler, swinging the ball in to the right handers and knocking out poles. I was also a little disappointed on his test debut because what we saw wasn't what I had built up in my head. But given what I know now, you certainly wouldn't complain about the career he's had.

I saw some footage of Wagner on the 2013 tour of England a while ago taking some pretty ***y "conventional" wickets. I don't think that 2012-15 Wagner was a bad bowler, it was more that the hype around him fizzled out a bit when he wasn't quite as quick as expected, plus Southee, Boult and Hobart Dougeh had just emerged.

Haha I don't remember anyone joining me in this awful take...in fairness, around this time, I was generally regurgitating whatever I'd heard from the first class scene and people playing there (who at this stage, might've been bitter old stagers airing their displeasure with life).
I remember Simon Doull ripping in to Wagner for exactly this, on the Windies tour 2012 I assume.

I assumed people thought he was the bees knees because he was an import. Back then sooo many club cricketers thought we were an easy ticket to test gigs only to be pulverized into oblivion by Sinclair, Franklin, Ingram, Arnel, Mason etc. They all got disgustingly hyped up too. Wellington in particular became a complete joke under two Australian coaches.

Wagner's first season was pretty mediocre. Maybe his second too. Myburgh and van Wyk got going well (probably due to the roads) and Elliott took a while to gain traction.

Wagner bowled a 145kph inswinging Yorker to get KP lbw that was impressive. We were all salty because he was proving us wrong iirc ?

It was especially after he took 5 wickets in an over (all bowled) vs Wellington (which Google tells me was in 2011) by pitching it up and swinging it.

Definitely part of it, and at the exact time that he left SA maybe he was seeing the writing on the wall regarding the future (although he was only just turned 22, I think). Nevertheless he wasn't just some random South African guy, he was (or had recently been) a genuine prospect coming through their system, so in his case our hopefulness wasn't entirely unfounded. Quite different from say a Conway, who had also been highly touted as a teenager but was basically a discard by the time he got here.

Has Boult already played his last match for NZ? Will he not be playing anymore?
Given how NZ treated it this summer ide say so. If your not gonna ask him when half your first choice pace attack is out injured and he's not playing in franchise cricket don't know when they will ask him.

Yep. Like Nintendo said, the circumstances were as ideal as they'll ever be to play the Mount and he didn't. So he's done.
The whole handelling of that situation in the first test vs England still shocks me honestly.

It'd be like if Cummins got injured, Boland was unavailable, neser was under an injury cloud and starc decided to focus on franchise cricket all at the same time and to remedy that situation the Aussie selectors called up Sam rainbird and an out of form Sean Abbott with a morally questionable rape charge on his record over jhye, or stekekke, or Sutherland, or Barlett, or bird, or a ton of other players. It's so outlandish that even writing it down on paper I'm shaking my head but somehow the NZ selectors managed to achieve a similar result in the real world.

There’s still plenty of chat that he’ll be in the World Cup squad.

Personally I think he’s made his choice, he’s gone for the cash and easier lifestyle and doesn’t want to be involved in games like our last two tests, so he doesn’t deserve a place on the team right now.

BTW. No word yet on that NZ A v Aussies series in April? April is getting close. Not happening? Or NZC comms combined with no media?

What is our WC side looking like btw? I reckon 6 bowlers might be the way to go:

Phillips
Conway
Kane*
Mitchell
Latham +
Macewell
Santner
Milne/Ferguson
Southee
Boult
Sodhi

?

The schedule is up on scoring.nzc.nz. First game on the 1st.
Nice. It is amazing that someone like me, who consumes media (although via websites rather than apps - so stays the f*#k away from Cricket Nation), did not know this already.

So do I. Very good chance it will be his final acts for NZ.
Also definitely his final act. (and rightly so, no point in using him for any JAMODIing or JAMT20ing), would be too far out of the loop by the time the following ICC tournament comes around, let alone his own semi-retired mindset.

And we drew the series lmao

Australia might be flabbergasted at how weak NZ A is at the moment.

It would be good if we could make them think that playing us in an A series every 4 years (before an away ashes) is worth their while.

Might have to pick more 'old guys' than desired to meet that end? Is it worth it, no particular liklihood of it being regular.

They are a fairly terrible cricketing neighbour (although hard to pinpoint blame in this era when we have our own terrible administration and no media asking any questions of who is trying what if anything ... ),the lack of contact between these two neighbours at 'A' level and U19 level is just extraordinarily non-existant. My hunch, based on money and resources, is I know where to assume the lack of interest is ..... e.g. not us.
