Why Alec Stewart ahead of Les Ames if you want batting? I'd put plenty of English keepers ahead of Stewart too.

With Hammond and Root as 5th and 6th bowlers, England don't necessarily need an allrounder. If an allrounder is picked and the tail looks weak, Ames at 6 and the allrounder at 7 is a decent option.

I forgot about Trueman but your choice has weak batting lineup. It looks like you always have something negative to say about my selection and your friends come immediately to support your view. The All Time XI you choose has only 5 proper batsmen and if they play against a strong bowling side they will crumble. I went for Pietersen as he is more of an attacking batsmen compared to Barrington a stonewaller and Flintoff as no8 batsmen can be useful as England don't have a Wicket keeper batsmen like Gilchrist.
Cough cough Les Ames. And choosing Flintoff as a frontline bowler weakens the attack considering that he was so so overall. And the other bowlers were iffy outside England. And your batting isn't any stronger than the team I posted.

Hobbs
Hutton
Hammond
Barrington
Root
Botham
Knott+
Trueman
Underwood/Verity
Anderson
Barnes

Isn't particularly weaker batting wise than what you proposed.

Flintoff is not a frontline bowler, he is the fifth bowler.

England XI
1) Jack Hobbs
2) Len Hutton*
3) Wally Hammond
4) Kevin Pietersen
5) Joe Root
6) Ian Botham
7) Alan Knott+
8) Andrew Flintoff (He was a better bowler than Ben Stokes so went for him)
9) Derek Underwood
10) Fred Trueman
11) James Anderson

That's the team you picked. So who are the frontline bowlers then???

Anderson and Trueman will open the bowling, followed by Botham and Underwood. Flintoff and Hammond will assist other bowlers to complete the Overs. Sometimes if opponent team is doing very well then the English Captain should not feel that he is running out of options. If you have a batting order upto No8 it’s a psychological booster and Batsmen can play with less pressure. Flintoff has the most comfortable place in the Team as he plays at No8 and comes as No5 Bowler.
