This is the first draft of a model to compare performance by players to what would be expected of the average player in their situation and then fitting them into a simple MVP system. I will post the full spreadsheet (or attach it, whichever works best) in another post but for now the gist is in this OP. This is a far more developed version of what I quickly posted in the Smith vs Viv thread the other day. I am posting this here for feedback on the first draft before I add spinners to it. I would like to do one for batsmen too. Some players will be missing, but every pacer with 100 test wickets should be here along with multiple guys close to it or just significant to their country. I already know I forgot Constantine and Griffiths, they will be added. I am also aware there are limitations and improvements I would like to make. I will address them in another post as this is a very long post already.

Rating players based on the context of their era is something I agree with, but wanted to take one step further - the only thing that matters is your performance in your era.

This perspective renders discussions on whether the 2000s bowlers all sucked or there were so many good fast bowlers in the 1980s because the batsmen all sucked and the South African talent factory was banned irrelevant. You don't want the player who will succeed in 2054, you want the best player right now because they are the most valuable player to every contemporary cricket team. This view returns ATG debates to reality.

This is not an attempt to find the objective best player, but to judge how far above the expectations of their era each player performed. This allows the reader to discuss this list sensibly and continue believing fast bowling peaked in 1837 or that all pre-WWI players were backyard cricketers.

I made some assumptions which do create limitations, and I'm surprised the end result is as decent as it is.

1) The average player would achieve the aggregate of all players performing their skill (for this list, pace bowling) during their career e.g. if the aggregate of all pace bowlers between 01 Jan 2000 and 31 Dec 2010 take 5000 wickets at an average of 25 and strike rate of 50, the average pace bowler between those dates will average 25 with a SR of 50. If Ronald Fogglebottom averages 23 and strikes at 47, he's in credit. Note - Sobers and Johnston were compared to all bowlers of their type.

2) It is harder to play away from home. I have found ye olde days times where this does not appear to be true, but whatever good enough for a first draft.

3) All opposition are equal. I have no way (yet) of weighting performance so it is what it is for now.

4) It is harder to be good for a long time than it is a short time. Quality longevity should be rewarded.

The core of this draft model is Expected Average Score, Expected Strike Rate Score and Quality Longevity (Impact Points). WPM and are also included. I do not believe in penalising players so every player is given the opportunity to get some points. A player can score 0 on both expected measures and still provide years of valuable service to their team, because below average players can have good games.

Expected Average Score: I took the difference between average and expected average, and non-home average and expected non-home average, and made the equation
"Expected average difference + (non-home expected average difference x 0.5) x longevity bonus". I used a MAX in Excel to prevent anyone with a negative result dropping below 0.

The longevity bonus is there to differentiate the 5 minute wonders from the 10 year brigade with similar results. It's scaled to reflect era because a 10 year career for Aus in 1950-60 is different to today. I eyeballed cutoffs by looking at annual tests played in each year. Open to change. Your era is judged by when you retire. The bonus is as follows:

1973 - Present: 50 tests or more = 10 points, 40 = 7.5, 30 = 5, <30 = 1.
WWI end to 1972: Same points but minimum 40 tests for 10 points, 30 for 7.5, 20 for 5 and <20 is 1.
Pre-WWI: Congratulations, you played one of the few tests on, have 10 points.

Expected Strike Rate Score: The same equation except for the end where instead of being multiplied by the longevity bonus it is divided by 2. SR was added in last to this model and has been the fiddliest to get right.

Impact Points: This is to measure quality longevity. It is a very simple points system, and it's mainly here to sift the long term overachievers from the short term ones and give some points to the below average players. You can get some serious points here as you can carry your best years with you and multiply them. Years only count if they comprise 3 tests or more. You drop years of 1 or 2 tests and any year averaging over 35, but you keep all 5fers for the next category.

<35 average: 1 point per year
<30 average: 1 point per year, x 2
<25 average: 1 point per year, x 3
< 20 average: 1 point per year, x4

Vanburn Holder had 5 years averaging below 35, 2 years below 30 and 1 below 25 so earns 12 impact points. 5 + 4 + 3 = 12.

Any ye

WPM and 5fers: WPM is pretty important in the final equation as a sifter and 5fers is here because they deserve recognition. WPM is multiplied by longevity bonus in the final score and 5fers count for one point each (meaning a year where you averaged 37 but took a 5fer means you get some credit for that performance).

SCORE: Is calcucated as (Expected Average Score x 1.5) + SR Score + Impact Points + (WPM x Longevity bonus) + 5fers. This appears to be the most sensible results, though some players still brute force it.

Yes and no, the true margins are tiny but look larger than they are in the 'score' because this model is designed to exaggerate small differences at the top end. Small adjustments to how SR is valued for example launch Lohmann, Waqar, Trueman and Cowie right up there. When I first entered SR into the model Lohmann, Steyn, Waqar and Cowie basically broke it. You can get on an absolute run with the impact points as well, because by design I wanted to give the Johnsons and Tysons of this world a chance to make a statement.

You can throw a blanket over the top 10 based on how it went when I was experimenting with the model to see how it behaved with small changes. From Barnes upwards especially, their achievements relative to the average bowler of their era are identical. Of the full longevity bonus players Anderson, Lindwall and Davidson are very sensitive to changes in the model but always stay in the top 20 or so. Bruce Taylor and Terry Alderman are probably the most broken players overall because they love any weighting that values away records and strike rate.

In terms of notable players I found we might be underselling Gillespie, Morkel and Hoggard in particular. Roach deserves a mention for getting as high as he has in a model biased towards averaging/striking above expectation with a measly 3 points across those things. He's all hometown impact.

Lee absolutely battled until I introduced SR into the mix because of a meh impact score and poor average score and in terms of disappointments Thomson's terror factor can't be modeled to boost his output (especially away from home) and Ntini, Kasprowicz and Collinge are perhaps flattered by circumstance.

I'd put the cut off for ATG at about 170 points. Cummins is there without full longevity points yet but he also exploits the model as an outlier with his huge gap between debut and second test. His impact points though are very healthy, often more so than many ahead of him.

What I also found interesting is just how short of a time most bowlers are competent at test level for. Less than half of this not-exhaustive list averaged under 35 for more than 5 years. Outside the Big 3 nations that's 20-25 matches of just competence and even for Big 3 it's about 30-40. It tends to support picking players while they're hot immediately, though things are improving. Of the 23 bowlers with 10 years or more averaging <35, 17 debuted post 1970 and 9 post 1990.

Edit - another observation is some short careers in tests played can be about as long as guys with 50+ in competent years. Ryan Harris for example was competent for 5 years (and basically great for 4) which in terms of competent longevity puts him firmly in the middle. The likes of Chris Martin, Ishant Sharma and Peter Siddle have the reputation of reliability but don't actually offer much more useful reliability than Ryan Harris.

Whatever it takes!!!
Any stats based exercise, by definition, will reward guys who were picked at their best and more importantly, played far less when they were less than their best. This is a very interesting way to look at bowlers though. I wanna see more details but I like what you have done so far and the enormous effort that may have been required to put this together. Kudos @Flem274* :)

It is really worth noting that teams would always prefer to pick players who can get them wickets even if they go for more runs as long as the average scores themselves are on the higher side. Think Harbhajan in the 00s in India for example. I am not saying he was better than his numbers suggested or anything, he really did bowl **** way too often and way too long to be considered even among the greats, but him and Ishant are good examples of bowlers who will get you wickets even if they give away more runs on average on tracks that produce more runs on average anyways.

I think pre-DRS spinners who bowled after covered decks will be rewarded by expectation FWIW. There are lots more pretty averages today for the spinners thanks to (justly) better umpiring systems and more interesting pitches.

Harbhajan won't be measured by the expectations of Ash or Jaddu's career but by what you would expect the average spinner to achieve during his. I don't know how Harby specifically will go but I expect Murali and Warne to be top 10 here.

Not that I expect wreckage for Ashwin or old spinners either. Greats still stand out. A lot of bowlers were expected to average 28-29 and still march into the top 20 here. the modern players (2017~) also have brutal expectation but Bumrah etc will be fine once they collect their full longevity bonus and keep up the good work.

On the details I'm happy to post the full spreadsheet in a post but it's a bit uggo and long. Might wait for a new page or a couple of days.

This metric respects some of my favorite bowlers. Therefore it is valid, and I like it.

Also Flem274*, you are my spirit animal! Absolutely love the effort and the desire to try and capture this impact with a good quantitative framework!

Whatever it takes!!!

My point was not really about the spinners though. In essence, what I am saying is, if I am part of the current England test team management, for example, I would rather pick players who can get me wickets even if they average 30, because I know my team is going to score plenty of runs given the way they play anyways. The ability to take wickets in a given timeframe is more important than having to get them cheaply in this case.

I can give you a version where SR weighting = average weighting if you like. It's quite different from ranking orthodoxy though.

Cheers bro. I don't think I could have taken on something like this without PEWS and DoG pioneering deep dive lists, and getting me thinking about what analyses interest me and why. There was that other dude as well who made the 1990s to today batting thread which was fun and of course poor old Viriya who we were probably way too mean to.

I first started thinking about our expectations of players when I made the 35 average thread and noted some trivia about how few batsmen averaged 50 in the 80s and right now. I've had a theory for a while 00s bowlers don't get the appreciation they deserve due to slightly ugly averages as well.

this is fantastic work and far better than the usual x vs y comparison threads clogging up the forum. more of the same please

I’m pleased that it gives some justice to Hoggard and Gillespie in particular as they bowled in an era unfriendly to bowlers and yet that is never considered seriously when discussing them

Not really. Its a complex thing and depends as much on the talent available to that team at that moment as much as anything else.
yeah i get that a team like Bangladesh doesn't have the same luxury like India but still those exceptions are lesser than the norm and having a factor that rates longevity like Flem does really helps for that too

could we take a peek behind the curtain at raw average against expected with no longevity bonus? would love to be able to see the raw numbers then use the longevity as more of a qualitative differentiator

Hello. I'm boring so I made a ranking thing. If you just want some scores and ratings to yay or nay rather than a wall of explanatory text, here you go. Wall of text is below. Full spreadsheet in post #7.

Ok
