What is your definition of ATG?

That would be a weak argument.

Fantastic player, and rightly in most people's all time Test XI with the gloves, but most def not a top 5 cricketer of all time.
surely being the undisputed best at your position of all time has to count for something in that regard though

Being no.1 with less competition doesnt mean as much as being the no.3/4 bat of all time.
flipside of that argument is that gilchrist is the bradman of keeper-bats being so undisputably head and shoulders above the competition that questions as to who's number one are put to bed unequivocally

He isnt though. Bradman is like having two worldclass batsmen in one.

Imran >>> Gilchrist.
Bradman, Sobers, Imran, Hadlee, Viv, Tendulkar, Smith, Viv, Marshall, McGrath, etc. > Gilchrist.

Gilchrist was a worldclass keeper and a worldclass bat. But the quality differential between an ordinary keeper/bat and a worldclass one like Gilly doesnt make up for the greatness in being the best bowler or batsman of your era IMO.
