Wouldn't it make more sense to compare then in white ball cricket? After a good debut series against Pakistan Bevan had a shocker in the Ashes with the short-ball and hardly played tests again while his ODI career obviously went from strength to strength.

Best way to compare them is probably at First Class level as thats the longest form of cricket.

Highest Score: 216*
50s: 81

Labuschagne - First Class

If you are going to look at Labuschagne's FC numbers to determine how good he is now, you may as well look at his numbers post 2018 after the move to Glamorgan. There was a significant technical overhaul since

I really want to say Marnus because he's new and it pisses people off but he's also the luckiest stat-padder I've ever seen so I'm torn. @TheJediBrah Help please.
There have been a few Aussie stat-padders lately, Marnus obviously. But also Voges (bad opposition, picked when in form) & Joe Burns (only picked when playing at home and usually on flat pitches).

Marnus is about a 40-average Test batsman that has over-achieved through a combination of great form & absurd luck

Bevan was a 45-50 average Test batsman that under-achieved through a combination of having a couple of bad series and never getting a chance to make up for it because the rest of the side was too strong to break back into

Usually when I agree with you so much it makes me reconsider my opinion but this is ?

Don't think we can fairly judge until marnus's career is over, tbh. His FC average is low 40's without test stats, but he was averaging roughly 30 in domestic FC until his glamorgan stint. If he keeps dominating shield like he has been his domestic FC average could end up at 50ish and it's a different discussion. Right now marnus is a better test bat, but bevan's a better fc bat. Would like to say Bevan had a higher cieling as a test bat, but marnus has averaged 60+ in test's at 3 over a 2-3 year stretch while playing vs some very good bowling attacks in one of the hardest batting era's of all time, with runs in england, the subcontinent and Australia in that time. That's an incredible peak, don't know if bevan could have matched that even given ideal circumstances.

tbf at home he's not really played against quality. also averages 33 in Asia.

Bevan fans may enjoy this 1994 profile on him (and Ponting) as Australia was looking at a Border replacement.

That 33 average in Asia is mostly down to the 2018 tour before he hit his peak tbf, averaged 40 across 5 matches when we toured SL and PAK earlier in the year. Faced Anderson, broad and robinson in a seam friendly series, india (who had a very good attack up until the 4th test, even with injuries) and an NZ pace attack with peak Wagner and southee in good nick.

His England performance was stellar, most of the rest was good but nothing that gets him bonus points for batting in “one of the hardest eras of all time”.
