His England performance was stellar, most of the rest was good but nothing that gets him bonus points for batting in “one of the hardest eras of all time”.
He's averaged 60+ batting 3 in one of the most hostile seam bowling era's EVER on decks that have been in aggerate far more seam friendly than the standard roads Australia had been producing, while facing good bowlers. Your probably right about the bonus points thing, but the era has to factor into consideration to some degree.

This whole "bowler-friendly era" thing gets overdone. It's not really relevant unless the player in question actually played in a lot of bowler friendly conditions which I don't think Marnus has. With the exception of last summer's Ashes, his home summers have been generally on very flat wickets. I wouldn't say his away games have been in particularly difficult conditions either

Labuschange is a much better red ball player than Bevan.

Bevan.got.found out at.test.level.by the short ball - he couldn't deal with it well enough.

As an England fan, Labuschagne has turned out to be a complete pain in the arse but he's a fine player

I think Marnus' "can't be caught" voodoo skills give him the edge here. If Bevan had sacrificed more loved ones to the dark powers, maybe he could have averaged 60 in Tests too.

Marnus is one hell of a fighter. Gets through so many tough periods where you're convinced he's gonna nick off.
