I have observed that whenever someone picks ATXI they pick 3 pace bowlers and 1 of Warne/Murali. This means that they consider the 3rd pacer to be better than either of Warne/Murali otherwise why not pick both ?
So how many fast bowlers do you consider to be better than atleast one of Warne/Murali ?

I have started picking both in AT XI at the expense of Barnes. I also pick 3 pace bowlers in addition.

Years ago when picking All Time XI's (not a regular pastime I must admit) I used to pick the best two openers, the best three middle order batsman, the best allrounder, the best keeper, best two pacers and best two spinners with no thought of team balance.

Gavaskar
Hobbs
Bradman
Richards
Tendulkar
Sobers
Knott
Marshall
Warne
Lillee
Murali

Patience and Accuracy+Gut

State Vice-Captain
O’Reilly
Syd Barnes
Hadlee
Marshall
McGrath
The top 5 in order better than both. And then Murali.

And ahead of Warne I would have-
Ambrose
Steyn
Lindwall
Trueman
Imran
Lillee
Akram

So,11 bowlers and 10 quicks.

Ambrose, Imran and Steyn are comparable to Murali.

Isn't it more that they're more likely to win you a game than Warne/Murali in any given conditions, spinny pitches excepted?

I mean its not like the teams picked are choosing Zaheer Khan as third seamer.

Marshall, McGrath, Imran, Murali, Warne would do.

Most sides in modern times in most conditions select three quicks and a spinner, and generally have someone in the top six who is a proper all rounder or who can bowl a few mediums or spinners. Generally ATXIs follow this convention.

If you’re selecting an ATXI for the subcontinent or old SCG conditions you might select two spinners, but it’s usually 3 quicks and a spinner who make up most XIs.

You need 3 quicks because they're fragile and can break down. You don't want to play a Test with just 1 frontline seamer.
