Lara played against better attacks for sure, but doesn’t have a more well rounded record. It is not very clear looking at their their home/away averages, but if I had to choose one, it would be Sobers. Outside of WI(where Sobers has even better performance, tho both were great home batsmen), Lara only averages 50+ in one major nation(tho 100 in SL). Averages below 40 in Ind and NZ, barely averages 40+ in Aus. Does average 45+ in SA and Eng, however in Pak, average got really boosted in the last 8 or so matches in which he played a Pak attack without the two Ws. Major nations where Sobers played in were Aus, Ind, Eng, Pak, NZ. Was good in Aus(46), great in Eng(53), superlative ind(99), great at home, didn’t do well in NZ only, only played two matches in Pak.He averaged 83 and 89 against India and Pakistan who were minnows in their time. Without them his average falls 49. Still good but he did a bit of minnow bashing.
Compared to Lara who has a more well rounded record.
Both are in my top 10 tho.
if we go down by this logic then Imran is a better bowler thn Mcgrath, Sangakkara is a better batsman than SachinSobers averaged 60.62 when he batted at no.5 or above, and scored around 60% of his runs at these positions. His great average is in spite of batting at 6, not because of it.
Also, others you mentioned did not have the workload of bowling an insane 40 overs per match, hence could focus on their batting alone. One more reason why I rate Sobers as the best ever batsman after Bradman. A unique cricketer in history whichever way you look at it.
Lara only played 3 matches in India so we can excuse his performance thereLara played against better attacks for sure, but doesn’t have a more well rounded record. Well also in the only major away nation he mastered, Lara played 4 matches only, compared to Sobers played 9 matches in India. Plus even without Ind, Lara was substandard in NZ ans barely above standard in Aus. Sobers mastered conditions at home, Aus(to a better extent than Lara), Eng and Ind.Lara only played 3 matches in India so we can excuse his performance there
Checklist posting gone terribly wrong.Lara was substandard in NZ ans barely above standard in Aus
Except Sobers never had to play against McWarneWell also in the only major away nation he mastered, Lara played 4 matches only, compared to Sobers played 9 matches in India. Lara played his first series in '92/93. It was his third series overall against a decent Australian attack which did include Warne.Lara had his best series in Aus in 1991-92 when neither Warne nor McGrath were bowling. Played 3 series vs them in Aus. Struggled in first 2, scored in 2005-06, but most of those runs came in the final test, when the series was decided, that too on and Adelaide road.
Sangakkara averages 40 as WK ?if we go down by this logic then Imran is a better bowler thn Mcgrath, Sangakkara is a better batsman than Sachin
And 67 without it.Sangakkara averages 40 as WK ?
Can you point out "many" such attacks?. And Sobers would have faced many such decent attacks.
Dravid league ATG specialist batsmanAnd 67 without it.
