Assuming this poll is asking purely as a batsman. I can't say as I didn't see Sobers play, and there precious little to pick between them in their career records or the effusiveness of the praise from their contemporaries. Sobers maybe the slightly more consistent, and obviously had his bowling and fielding, which made him a vastly more valuable cricketer overall. As someone put it previously, Sobers was like having Lara, Vettori and Vaas all in one cricketer, and you could probably add Michael Clarke in the field as well.
All wrong.

Lara > Sobers in batting. Sobers pummeled bad teams. Didnt play vs. as many good bowlers as Lara did. Too many not outs.

Vaas >> Sobers. Vaas got wickets vs. stronger sides and worst conditions.
Vettori >> Sobers. Same reason as above.

Nah.

Would be interested for a more detailed explanation of that, because that's simply inaccurate from what I understand. That said, maybe my understanding is incorrect, so am interested to get a fuller rationale for those claims.

The difference between Kallis and Sobers as allrounders is the same difference as Kallis and Lara as batsman. Kallis & Sobers' bowling was on par and Lara's batting was slightly but still noticiably better then Kallis'.

:( You used to like my Bush jokes...what happened to you, man?
Don't worry, I like your jokes... especially when they backfire on you.

Sobers....

Not only was he the greatest WI batsman of his generation (like Lara), but he was also a decent left arm-pacer (unlike Lara), a good spinner (unlike Lara), and an outstanding fielder (unlike Lara).

Think that the question was in reference to their batting only, wasn't it?

Tough one here I reckon as they have a few similarities - lefties, best WI of their generation, huge backlifts, played the full array of shots. Will say Sobers but I don't really know why. Perhaps there's some mystique there as I never saw him play, whereas I saw all too much of Lara.

Seriously, a scratch your head sorta stat. And if he had only averaged say, a reasonable 40 or so, his test average could've been north of 60.
He averaged 83 and 89 against India and Pakistan who were minnows in their time. Without them his average falls 49. Still good but he did a bit of minnow bashing.

Compared to Lara who has a more well rounded record.

Both are in my top 10 tho.
