Agree that considered in isolation he's better as a specialist batsman, but the all time Asian XI has lots of atg batsmen to choose from and no atg keeper bat (Pant is on track to get there). So I think it's fine to give Sanga the gloves here.
I'd rather pick a quality keeper (especially in the subcontinent). The three best are Engineer, Bari, and Prasanna Jayawardene. Bari struggled with the bat, so it is between the other two.

What about:

Gavaskar /
Engineer + /
Dravid /
Tendulkar /
Sangakkara /
Younis / Laxman /
Shakib / o
Imran* o /
Wasim o /
Waqar o
Murali o

The real problem here is a decent fifth bowler -- Shakib edges it over Mushtaq Mohammad for me. Alternatively, open with Mankad and have Dhoni keep.

Really Sehwag? He can't play swing at all. Also Dhoni was neither a good test bat nor a captain.

Waqar or even Imran over Malinga in ODIs

Sorry but Jadeja isn't really necessary since there is already enough batting depth. Pick your two best spinners. I go for Kumble overall and Ashwin if in SC.

I agree and I have Sanga batting lower in the order to make it easier for him.

sehwag doesn't belong here

Jadeja is as good as Ashwina s an spinner plus a gun fielder

So quite similar to the OP. Kapil very stiff to miss out but the second spinner adds more IMO.

I considered Ashwin ahead of Jadeja because Imran-Wasim-Ashwin is still a perfectly good 7-9... but having the second spinner turn it the other way to Murali seemed like a good idea, so as is often the case the answer is Jadeja.

Highest averages in test cricket by Asian keepers (minimum 20 tests as keeper):

Pant - 43.32
Rizwan - 42.03
Sanga - 40.38
Liton Das - 40.14
Chandimal - 39.54
Dhoni - 38.09
Mushfiqur - 37.00
Sarfaraz - 36.39

Prasanna Jayawardene (29.5) was a much better keeper than all of them, but it depends how strong you want your batting to be.

Imterestingly, Hashan Tillakaratne only averaged 31.5 in 11 tests as keeper, but 44.90 in his 72 matches as a specialist batsman. He's often forgotten when very good SL batsmen are discussed.

Sanga averaged an absolutely ridiculous 66.78 (31 100s) from 86 tests as a non-keeper, so I think he should be in as a specialist bat. As a comparison Smith averages exactly 60 from 87 tests (28 100s).*

* And yes I know he started as a leggie.

Waqar will get smashed to all parts under current ODI rules once the reverse swing is taken out of the equation. Malinga has lot more in his arsneal than pace and reverse swing.

Pant will overtake Dhoni in future.

Dhoni > Sanga
1.Similar avg
2.Dhoni has longevity and wont mess batting order
3. A low avg No:3 in an AT 11 doesn't make sense, and if he bats in lower order.. Good chance for a lower avg.
4. Specialist Sanga is 3rd best Asian batsman after Sunny and Sachin

Still, he is one of the top 10 openers ever to play the game. And a unique one at that as he is different to other openers who are all mostly conservative. He will be a perfect foil to Gavaskar.

You can't rule out Waqar based on a what if. He is objectively one of the most destructive ODI bowler ever and clearly ahead of Malinga.

The best Asian ODI Xi:

Sachin
Rohit
Zaheer
Kohli
Babar
Dhoni
Imran
Kapil
Wasim
Waqar
Murali

Happy to replace Sehwag with Anwar, but on points it should be Sehwag

And Ashwin is clearly better than Jadeja as a spinner at home and roughly equal abroad
Ashwin is not clearly better than Jadeja at home. Jadeja actually averages lesser with the ball at home than Ashwin on the same set of conditions and same set of opponents. As a batsman at home, there is no contest since Jadeja averages 40+ while Ashwin averages 30-. As a fielder, Ashwin can't move more than 2 steps even to catch a flying bun to eat while Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world currently.

It is just your perception that Ashwin is better and do go ahead with that perception. But do not say that Ashwin is clearly better than Jadeja.
