Jeez there's some proper mediocrity in that list.

And Lara has played the most flawless innings than the "top five"

Also Gavaskar > Sobers. Opener > No.6
Flawless innings doesnt mean flawless career.

Tendulkar, Sobers, Viv and Hobbs are the four with the least flawed overall records plus generally considered the best of their eras.

Viv is closer to Lara than he is to the other three tbh.

Yeah it's purely based on Test batting.

Headley and Hammond are too high on your list. Gavaskar and Lara too low.
Purely Tests:

1) Bradman
2) Tendulkar
3) Sobers
4) Hobbs
5) Smith
6) Richards
7) Hutton
8) Lara
9) Hammond
10) Headley
11) Gavaskar
12) Pollock
13) Chappell
14) Sutcliffe
15) Ponting
16) Trumper (probably a very romantic pick)
17) Weekes
18) Compton
19) Border
20) Kallis
21) Sangakkara
22) Walcott
23) Miandad
24) Waugh
25) Boycott
26) Dravid
27) Barrington
28) Harvey
29) Kohli
30) Root

That 23-27 area I change my mind on a lot. Had Barrington at the top of the group actually until recently.

this era? post 90s

1. Tendulkar
2. Brian Lara
3. Kumar Sangakarra
4. AB De Villiers
5. Jacques Kallis
6. Rahul Dravid (similar defensive to Kallis)
7. Ricky Ponting
8. Gilly- impact player(average not as high- keeping)
9 . Steve Tuggah Waugh

Im sure most will agree with the above- approximately.

****No steve smith, kohli, root - modern day flat tracks have padded their average and i dont rate them. The above managed high averages on some tough tracks, v some crazy bowling attacks, and were very very skillful.

lol apart from Lara, Tendulkar and Waugh, all of them played mostly on flattest tracks since WW2.

Smith played on far more tougher tracks then Ponting or Dravid.

Sobers batted top 5 more than 6. Batting position is close to irrelevant anyway in Tests. Certain players do better in certain positions. Gavaskar would probably have averaged less in the middle order

My TOP 10( all formats combined) as of now

1. Bradman // though 1 format only , he was way ahead of his contemporaries
2. Viv Richards // such dominating brilliance in both formats and far ahead of his contemporaries in ODIs,
3. Sachin Tendulkar // most complete batsman , brilliant in both formats, uniform records in all countries he played in coping enormous pressure of expectations.
4. AB Devilliers // such uniform brilliant record in tests and a monster in ODIs
5. Brian Lara // compiling mammoth inns was his speciality which deserves huge weightage. Very good ODI player too.
6. Greg Chappel // another batsman with such uniform record in both formats. Though lacks a bit in longevity when pitted against eras, that was adequate for the era he played in .
7.Virat Kohli // all format giant. May retain his position or not depending on his career end records.
8. Ricky Ponting // brilliant record in both formats. Would have been higher but for his pretty average record in India
9. Steven Smith // monster in tests and a good player in ODIs.May retain his position or not depending on his career end records.
10. Sunil Gavaskar // monster in tests for the era he played in .Was good in ODIs too.

Opening is objectively tougher, because u have to face the new ball with pacers at their fastest.

You don’t actually follow any cricket do you?

Top level cricket is mysterious. Certain players like batting certain positions more. Don’t forget the bowlers need to get their eye in too at the start.

Opening is objectively tougher but Sobers did objectively better and there was no doubt in any of the cricket fraternity's minds that he was the best of his time. Gavaskar would not be considered ahead of Viv.
