Who is the worst player of all time that would be selected in every XI in history?

Haha I really liked this. Would be so much better as a pub argument than a forum argument with people over-analysing it and going through old scorecards.
My initial post which drew the “pub argument” comment from Attila was straight from the pub. I only sped read the last few pages that seem to be implying that Martyn is the benchmark. I instantly thought of a Windies middle order from 73 that wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole. On that basis he didn’t seem to fit. Doesn’t really matter of course, but any inkling that I ever look at scorecards and stats is a no no. :santa:

Haha I definitely thought yours was a pub response, don't worry.

I don't think these bits and pieces ARs that are being suggested are busting into a number of sides. Greig/Brian Macmillan/Barlow are a decent shout- touching distance of the weakest bat in any team and bringing bowling too.

I think these guys are likely better players than a specialist good enough to make any team though.

Azharuddin. He's slightly better the Martyn for me, he would also make the 80's Windies or late 00's India.

sounds like you're this close to the watson pill

If we're thinking along the lines of guy who can slot in ahead of the no name opener batting with 3 Ws and Sobers and also overtake Martyn and Gomes, I stand by Colin Cowdrey who averaged 43 as an opener and 50 at 5. Average nerfed by WSC enforced return too.
Cowdrey's final series recall was 3 years before WSC (and was due to Amiss and Edrich getting injured) - are you thinking of Bob Simpson?

can't remember the full side off the top of my head but he's better than flintoff and i'm tired of pretending that he's not
Even if you think he’s better across his career, which as an all-rounder he isn’t, the idea he displaces Flintoff in 2005, the best player in the world at the time, is for the fairies.

I know there’s been eight pages of discussion since the post but I couldn’t let it pass. Watson doesn’t get in our 2005 side and he only gets in our all-conquering 10-11 side if he’s prepared to bat six, once Collingwood has retired. Real talk

Why all these comments about Watson?

He wouldn't have made the NZ WTC winning side of 2021, or even our 2004 side that lost 3-0 to England.
he beats out henry nicholls for that spot easily ESPECIALLY given that the match was in england

edit: much as i love colin there's a fair argument he's got a point of entry there as well

I'm pulling the deserves to average more card that's been used on Kapil for big Watto

Big top order biffer, good technique, can bowl all day. Good player, a useful addition to any side

What would he have added to the England 2005 side?

Better batting than Bell, his 176 in England was at 3, he can replace Bell. Can bowl when Jones breaks down

He’d have got the 5th Test yeah.

I mean I don’t think the better batting than Bell really stands up. Bell of 05 was pretty erm, well yeah. But Bell was actually ahead of Pietersen in the pecking order at that point, and therefore also Thorpe. Across the career, Bell a much better Test bat than Watson.

But yeah he’s have got picked ahead of Collingwood though ultimately that would have been a mistake as Colly was a better Test bat than Watson and there’s no point in that time period where we really needed Watson’s subpar bowling.

I actually quite like Watson, but.
