Have been meaning to post for a while - I don't love G Phillips' default shot against spinners. He typically plays back, gets quite front on and relies on fast hands to try swat the ball. Puts him in an awkward position and weight going back reduces the power he gets (even when he has the strength to generate plenty).

Does sweep and reverse sweep so it's not like there's nothing else in the toolbox. But doesn't come forward or down the wicket much. Overall I just hate that play-back-swat front-on French cricket shot.

Hehe, as I write this he hits a six - slog sweep, weight going forward though so got the power.

Looks like you selected the side today.

Excellent time to be back in form after a bit of second-season-itis.
Kippax made a pretty good point I was going to follow up on, but then Conway made runs and it didn't fit as well. It seemed to me like Conway's first year was grit and determination, proving his worth, scoring tough runs etc, then he got all the accolades and an IPL contract, and the wheels started to fall off.

Which is exactly why I'd open him in Tests, apart from the fact it's a position much more suited to him than Young. I'd play into his determined mindset, give him that role and tell him to fight like hell in it, and our fortunes depend on you. I know it's one series, but he averaged 13 at number 4 and looked far less focused than when he opened in the same country a year earlier.

I reckon GP's place in the side might've been up in the air with Chapman looking good, Bracewell's bowling exploits etc but he's sure putting that to bed here.

I say from cricinfo's scoring, as I do not like Spark and I hear S.Stevenson is back in town

This is a top innings from Phillips. Got the wobbles with the double-wicket 17th over, but have taken 31 off the 10 balls since, mostly from Phillips.

51 off 19, GP you gun. They need to bowl c*ck height to him (which for him is yorkers) and tie him down

Other thing is that international teams studied him and adapted - bowl straight and even legside-ish on the awkward length. Leg slip, deep square leg can be catchers. Don't give room outside off except for the occasional tempter. Probably other insights too.

I'm firmly on the bandwagon of Conway opening in ODIs and T20s. And I'm up-and-down on whether it would be best for NZ if he opened in tests. I think he'd do a better job of it than anyone else we have right now, including Latham. And makes one more middle order spot for Nicholls/Mitchell/Young/someone, rather than having an opener spot we don't know what to do about. Would the side be better overall? Maybe.

Conway should still probably bat where he'll score the most runs. We still have plenty of careers to toy with before we need to start resurrecting middle order players as middle order players.

Williamson, Conway, Young or Nicholls, Mitchell, Blundell is probably our best 4-7 in terms of quality. Since Latham is a myth, I see the appeal to opening with Conway though.

I'm sad CdG retired tbh. He and Mitchell weren't competing for one spot anymore, I was ready to drop Nicholls next series.

Test XI I'd like to see:
Latham
Conway
Williamson
Nicholls/Young
Phillips
Mitchell
Blundell
Nathan Smith
Jamieson
Southee
Patel

Haven't been able to see today's game, but it sounds like some quality batting by Litton Das and Shakib.
