Since I have been advocating assessing Tendulkar's career based on what he did between 20th and 38th birthday (because so many folks go "meh longevity"), I looked at same period for Ponting. It really leads to exclusion of 1 test and reduces his average by less than a fifth of a run. So really, in a standard ATG career, he averages 51.85. That's how I'd assess him. There are no excess years to trim.
This is true when comparing Ponting to Tendulkar but not someone like Chappell.

Tendulkar is certainly a crazy outlier for starting his test career at 16

But why was 20 the number picked as the acceptable age for a player no longer having the excuse of being "too young for those stats to really count"

Sachin at 20 had four years test experience. Ponting at 24 had four years test experience, and 24 is still extremely young, as I'm sure a good portion of CW can agree with.

Let's start Pontings career from his 197 against Pakistan in '99, see what awesome numbers we can cook up

Nah lets just compare stats between their first and last centuries.

Ponting 156 tests 12870 runs @ 54.30
Tendulkar 169 tests 14323 runs @ 58.22

Tendulkar wins

With Bradman it cuts off his pathetic first and last tests, I truly believe this is the best system.

Yeah. I don’t think people understand that we’re not
saying to ignore parts of a career in every single comparison but only when comparing two careers of significantly different lengths.

I really don't know anyone who suggests Ponting was a better player than Tendulkar, so I'm kind of not sure why that comparison is being made, unless it's a discussion about respective peaks or something.

Steve Waugh and Bob Simpson too. Both might average 60 using this methodology since they spent years being middling all rounders before their first tons

Except there literally was one argument that Ponting's rating should be based on on his career until 2007.

It was originally if Pontings career had ended after 2006, when he was averaging 60 after 107 tests, would CW elevate him above Sachin or not. In that scenario, knowing what I know about CW, I think yes they would have. Others disagreed

Cheers. I think some would have, mores o if he'd done better in India though. Tendulkar has a better-rounded record overall, but if Ponting had retired averaging 60 odd at that point, it may well have offset that line of thought too,

I personally rate Smith because up until this point, he doesn't really have any holes in his record. 40+ home/ away vs all comers (except two tests in Bangladesh).

He averages 50 away and has an amazing conversion rate. He has the consistency of Sachin, the monster series of a Lara, great series vs very good/great attacks like Viv.

His only remaining challenge is to keep somewhat good form for another 3-4 years.
