Yeah, I'd like to see him find some middle ground between not bowling at all, which helped SA's last 4 wickets treble their team's 1st innings score, and what we've seen today & in SA's 2nd innings at Old Trafford.

Yes, I made the same comparison during his marathon spell in the 2nd test. I think Fred's pointless heroics were during the 1st test against SL in 2006, but anyway.
Obviously you're dead right about Lees. And do we really need to risk a run-out?

I reckon 5 day test cricket will be finished within 5 years. They might keep 2 or 3 select series at 5 days for a bit longer, but I'd guess the Ashes will be down to 4 days by the end of the decade if the changes aren't even bigger than that. I don't think the players are interested in playing 5 days any more.

You say that but I don't ever remember a test match like this, almost finished in 2 days. Maybe a couple of times on a pitch that's an absolute minefield (I think there was one mid 90s at edgbaston against WIndies), but not because the players just stand there and try to slog it and then hardly even look bothered when they're out. This isn't a test match, it's a farce.

You're right about Edgbaston vs WI. And I'd forgotten all about it; 173 overs across 2 and a bit days in 1995.

Of course, the test that was actually finished in 2 days was against the same opposition at Leeds, five years later.
That being said, I really don't think that accusation can be levelled at SA in this test. Maybe one or two exceptions, but most of the dismissals have not been down to being over-aggressive. Nor, for the most part, England, although some of them have been.

I think you're right, but I don't think any of those matches were closer to 2 days than 3 days. The one I do remember was SA beating Zim in 2 days after the latter had lost most of their good players. Zim were skittled for not a lot, batting first and SA set up up a huge lead in no time at all before bowling them out for a 2nd time. It felt as if SA were making a point, and quite rightly too.

I've not watched most of it, but I did see some of the play during England's 1st innings collapse after tea and I thought it was awful. We've all seen worse collapses in terms of runs for wickets, but Brook's shot (no doubt under instruction) was just shocking, as yet again was the captain's innings.You're right about Edgbaston vs WI. The fact that England are coasting this last innings makes it so much worse for SA. They have given up.

Can't blame the bowlers. South Africa were 80 for 1, they had a platform, and the bowlers did their job this morning keeping the lead down.
