*Official* New Zealand in Australia 2022

Anyhoo, I’m glad we got to see a good tight ODI, almost a throwback really in the era of 350-plus scores. NZ don’t usually hit the ground running in Aus, I guess the pitch tempered home advantage a bit but still a really fun game. Savour it really, because international white ball cricket as we know it will only continue to decline.

Yeah it was great. Both teams were very close to full strength and as is usually the case when that happens the scores are more like the early 2000s (unless the pitch/ground size is silly).

It was a real throwback. I reckon anyone who watched who used to like ODIs but doesn't anymore would have been reminded why they did.

Yep, exactly.

The demise of ODIs will only be a self-fulfilling prophecy. There's still plenty of life in them if they want to value them, and have the acumen to find a way.

Allow my dangerous lightweight couple of glasses to weigh in pretentiously.

Cricjet won't flourush if it goes down the t20 us everything route because it's entertainment value put over sport (it's a sport, but focused on blockbuster spectacle and sfx over a deep plot and characters). Entertainment is cool and all but even if we take the pinnacle of it, the IPL, Indian fans online are big on their franchise but the most intense chats are definitely for the national side in tests and odis (not singling you guys out I just need the comparison and ipl is so much bigger than big bash, super smash etc)

National boards are gonna learn the downsides of chasing the casual imo. Holding someone's fleeting interest is so much harder than holding a sports fan because when you fully enter the entertainment market you're not competing with soccer or whatever anymore but marvel films and concerts.

Enjoy that. Pricks. F'n nzc.

He was when he got signed for megabucks in the IPL but got smashed by the Aussies then went down in the queue. I agree about Bracewell - really weird. And we've got Glenn Phillips - world class T20 player, great fielder, lightning between the wickets, 1st class av of 40, as good a spinner as Bracewell and he can't crack the ODI team.
I cannot agree with you more. If they're not gonna play Allen at the top, then Phillips should be automatic pick at 6 for me. In fact, he's probably automatic pick in all 3 formats for mine now.

Trent Boult described the Aussies as having a ‘naughty batting order’. Meme worthy.

——

Boult admits he isn't sure why he wasn't allowed an extended spell, but suggested Australia's deep batting order as a potential reason, with the likes of hard-hitting Glen Maxwell lurking at eight.

"I thought of having six, maybe seven and eight," he said. "I'm not too sure of what the thinking was there, but they batted a long way down.

"I think Maxwell at eight is a naughty batting order, and we knew that they bat deep and could take that game deep, so I presume that was the thinking there.

"Credit to the way they stuck in there and got the game done. I thought it was an exciting start to the series and with a quick turnaround, we'll go again."

If that was the thinking, it's interesting logic.

To me (and I thought this at the time, so it isn't genius in hindsight...nor is it particularly genius anyway) I felt as the ball got older, the dew/night air made it skiddier and easier to bat, so we had to carry on that momentum from 50-5. I really wasn't a fan of Santner in the 11th/12th over. Henry got 7 overs I think from memory which was fine, but I would have kept Boult going for a couple more - especially when you see how Carey was a very iffy starter.

I'm always a fan of trying to do what the opposition would least like you to do. I'd suggest that was have Boult continue to Carey and Green. I'm pretty sure the thing Carey most wanted to happen was have a LH spinner turn it into him and let him get away.

That's definitely true. It didn't look like fun batting against that new-ball under lights, almost like the night sessions of a Day-Night Test match. Would also think knowing you've got Maxwell still to come in would make you want to take as many wickets as you can (and get him in as soon as you can) even more but I don't know maybe that's just me

It's you and an entire army bro, haven't heard any rumours of late that bringing Santner on early was a clever piece of captaincy.
