That pressure was more acute in the previous test in which he scored 213. One reason why I rate that innings very highly, it should be in the top 15 or 20 of all time.Lara was staring down the barrel of losing the captaincy in the 99 series.
I guess my point was that the innings are close. But one gets featured in the top five of all-time, the other doesn't make the top 100 most times.
Yeah, it is unfair that Tendulkar's innings doesn't even figure in top 100 of all time. For me, it is a top 25 of all time kind of innings and arguably his best ever.Sachin only had Mongia who provided some support in that innings, while Lara had 3 batters who chipped in with useful 30s. I would still not claim that Sachin's inning was better or on par, just pointing out at the variables we always miss when we are so obsessed with stats and certain conditions without really looking at so many other factors that impact each game/innings.
Also, as mentioned by @subshakerz that "the innings are close. But one gets featured in the top five of all-time, the other doesn't make the top 100 most times. "
Overall, stats-crunching is good for the romance of it, but a lot of times it create a very unclear picture of things.
I really think this delivery should have been a contender for ball of the century. On a side note, Wasim Akram's delivery to end Rahul Dravid's innings was a thing of beauty. Just worth watching again and again. Genius bowling !
Nah. McGrath was being McGrath, Gillespie and MacGill were literally in the form of their careers and yeah Warne was **** but so was Waqar.Yeah, it was an incredible innings. Wasim was bowling so well, hooping it around corners at will in some parts of the innings and Saqlain was making the ball spit and bite off the wicket. I dare say they were a more formidable bowling attack in those conditions than McGrath Gillespie McGill and Warne were in the WI.
Pakistan had Waqar as well.
That's why I said "in those conditions". The conditions were quite favourable to spin and reverse swing in Chennai at that point in the match, can't say that conditions were bouncy or extremely favourable for spin that would be ideal conditions for the Aus attack. I saw both those matches, and while I rate the Lara innings higher, Tendulkar's innings should be rated a lot higher than it usually is.Nah. Chennai was a low scoring game too. The pitch had broken up a bit by that point. That's why I said "in those conditions". Lara played that entire series with a chipped elbow injury though which can be far more limiting for a batsmanI think Tendulkar gets marked down unfairly for India's defeat against Pakistan. But he was dismissed that innings, which means it wasn't as he was stranded at one end. It was a great great innings though most would agree that Lara's 153* was a step higher.
On the other hand, there could be valid counter points that Sachin had a terrible back injury through that innings and Lara was fortunate to be dropped by Healy close to achieving the target.
Have to admit that I wasn't aware of it. Though the reason was that Television was kept away from me. Parents took the safer approach with board exams approaching around that time. By the time, I had access to cricket again, Lara had already played his innings. One of my life's regrets that I wasn't able to watch two of the greatest innings of all time.Lara played that entire series with a chipped elbow injury though which can be far more limiting for a batsman
I let my 10th Physics exam go to **** and watched the Barbados knock and I was at the ground for the Sachin one. ??Have to admit that I wasn't aware of it. I still caught live radio commentary of Sachin's innings though. And this was 1999 not 1979 lol.
I didn't know this eitherLara played that entire series with a chipped elbow injury though which can be far more limiting for a batsman
His century as a teen in Perth was an ATG one in my mind.Tendy has played far too many iconic innings that didn’t produce favorable result; 155 and 169 against SA come to mind. And one thing about Tendulkar is most of his knocks came in when series was still alive. He didn’t really play that many memorable dead rubber innings.

Assuming something similar to this… SENA wins. Superior openers, Bradman, Gilchrist, roughly equal bowling attacks, too many factors in favour of SENA. (not even including Smith yet)
