Not according to mick vaughan. Gave his tick to Crawley over Hameed during the last ashes iirc. Makes you wonder ?
If you're trying to insinuate racism, this is mischievous at best, pretty damaging at worst. I would've gone for Crawley over Hameed, as well.

Yes absolutely, they obviously see something in Crawley but he would surely be better suited going back to Kent and rebuilding his shattered confidence. I’m sure he’ll come again if he has the ability they seem to think he has and hopefully be better prepared for Test cricket.

If they want to continue in this super aggressive style then surely Jason Roy would be a front runner if his white ball game hadn’t been so poor recently. Whether you agree with the style England have adopted if they’re going this way Roy has to be considered when in form. It seems not playing County Championship doesn’t matter and if Roy could play Test cricket with absolute clarity on the tempo he should bat, ie one-day cricket style, then he may prove more successful than our current pair. A low bar to aspire to admittedly.
On the basis of McCullum’s latest comments Crawley isn’t even expected to do any sort of consistent job as an opener. Just score one big/“match winning” innings every once in a while. Crackers.

i'm a bit bemused that roy is getting floated - "bazball", memes aside, if it even exists, is something ever so marginally more considered than brainless hacking
They seem to have collectively bought into the concept though. It didn't suddenly transform a bunch of journeymen Kiwis under Mccullum into world beaters, it won't do anything for this English side composed of hacks and have-beens either. All said and done, it's Root, Stokes, and Bairstow carrying Bazball and the last among those, a card-carrying member of the new religion apparently, was hardly a reassuring presence at the crease till not too long ago.

absolutely but my point is there's a difference between controlled aggression to foist the pressure back on to your opponent and being a hackfraud, and roy is most definitely the latter category

Definitely. That guy cuts such a sorry, lost figure in limited overs stuff these days, it would be criminal to subject him to this attack in Tests.

Mulder is right arm, and playing county. De Kock is a mid 30s test player who was part of a lot of collapses. Verreyne and Rickelton both have potential to be far superior test bats than de Kock.
Saw Rickelton bat for Norhamptonshire v Glos at Cheltenham last month, scored 95 + 68, looked a very fine player, great bloke as well, chatted to the spectators on the boundary. Should make their top order a bit more solid.

Maybe there are agent links there. Neither should be in the England setup tbh. Crawley is such a weird hill for any coach or fan to die on. He is such a mediocre cricketer than it should be impossible for anyone to be convinced of otherwise.

Love this SA team. Have perennially gone under the radar the last 12 months. Elgar is so steely and think he'll get the best of his players

I don't think a single person outside of the England set up thinks that persevering with Crawley in the side any longer is a good idea. That includes Crawley's immediate blood relatives.

(Ok, maybe @honestbharani excepted.)

Can someone please summarize the Crawley situation to me? I understand he is favoured by the management, but *why*?

The management have repeatedly given him full-throated support over the last few months, to the point where Stokes literally said "he will be selected no matter what".

This has angered many people because it looks like favouritism. He comes from an extremely wealthy background and represents what many of us dislike about English cricket, though as an individual he's known to be diligent and hard-working. We compare how he is being treated with how Hameed, Dan Lawrence and others from different backgrounds have been discarded after a shorter run of low scores.

The reality is he made a huge score two years ago and the management believe that shows he has the potential to be world class. So they back him to do that again. McCullum and Stokes gave everyone a clean slate when they started so they discount his bad run of form last year as well. He's good in the dressing room, works hard and is supposed to be a good fielder (but seems to drop a lot of catches). He fits a template they want.

However, you can't really look past the fact his first class batting average is less than 30 and his own county have two, even three better openers available (Compton, Bell-Drummond and Denly). He looks completely mentally shot and persevering with him now seems to be doing more harm than good.

This is a good article that explains why he is seen as emblematic of ongoing issues in English cricket: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/...rawley-is-running-out-of-ways-to-fail-1322870

I have said harsh things about him, and about the decision to keep him in the team; I know that is motivated by my own hang-ups and resentments. I also feel sorry for him because he shouldn't be in this situation. The system, and the ECB, are to blame, not Crawley himself.

While I agree with this sentiment, and it would not be easy, but Crawley does have the ability to remove himself from this situation if he thought it was best for himself and England...
