For the WI: Gayle, Hunte, and Fredricks would picked as openers over Haynes any day of the weak.

How do you look at that front 5 batting lineup and make any kind of comparison to the other teams' batting lineups full of modern era players? We can just assume that Hobbs and some of these others are goated, as a simple analysis of averages in their era would indicate. But even aside from an accusation that it's cheating to include a bunch of blokes with nice averages that none of us have ever seen, or only seen the most minimal of footage retrospectively. We honestly don't know how any of these guys would fare against a modern fast bowling technique, not perfected till the 70s and 80s by the WI, and then subsequently adapted by all modern era pace attacks to this day. In my opinion this is a huge asterisk on this batting lineup, which otherwise would be the best outside of the Bradman led Australia, by a simple analysis.

Mentioning Philander in this context has triggered me
Why the **** should it? Given that the SA side has as a shoe in for 1 or 2 spots already for some players who only played a handful of Tests, why would it be so hard to believe for this team specifically that a guy with a relatively smaller sample of Tests ( Philander's got well more than Pollock and miles more than Procter ) could be a gun player?

Whatever it takes!!!
I prefer tiers. I know the Bradman factor probably means Aus > WI but somehow, in my head, in that hypothetical game, its not as clear cut.

Tier 1 - Aus, WI
Tier 2 - RSA, England (I guess)
Tier 3 - Ind, Pak, NZ
Tier 4 - SL, Zim, BD, Ire, Afg

harsh on SL to share room space with the other four down in the dungeons

Ireland and Afghanistan shouldn’t be there either, maybe have them in tier 5 if they really are required

Fair enough... I did kinda lump them in.. SL and Zim in Tier 4 and the rest in Tier 5 then. But we have to understand how young those teams are and with most other test nations we would have probably ranked them in the bottom tier in their first two decades of test cricket too. Soz.

Would probably have Lillee over one of Lindwall or Davo, and imo Warne is a lock if there's only one spinner. Great seeing Bill Lawry getting some love here. Bloke is a genuinely underrated player.
Lawry is an underrated legend. Arguably as good as Simpson despite suffering in his shadow somewhat.

I tend to have Trumper in my Australia All Time XI. Second opener is a really tough task. Hayden, Simpson, Lawry, Ponsford all have good cases. Not a big fan of Morris.
3-5 of the Don, Chappell and Smith, Miller as the AR, and Gilchrist WK/Bat.
Warne as the spinner narrowly edging out Tiger, Lindwall would bat 8 with Lillee and McGrath at 10 and 11. Cummins might take Lindwall’s place but not there yet imo.

Latham as the keeper when he hasn’t kept in any test match with Watling around the corner feels so wrong

also Jamieson wtf

I would have a few NZ openers over Latham. He’s played in a tough era but his record against good sides is diabolical. It’s untenable.

Agreed. SL belongs in the same group as NZ ; probably on lower end.

RSA and Eng the toughest to split. NZ probably closer to SL than they are to India IMO.
