Has Ashwin surpassed Kumble?
Yeah this is the Dale Steyn argument. Suffice it to say, Ashwin would also have been an understudy to Warne and Murali.Kumble was always an understudy to at least 2 (some times 4) other contemporary spinners. Ashwin on the other hand has been near undisputed best spin bowler in the world for quite a while now. That plays on my mind when comparing the two.
It was a good show but 12 wickets @ 28 is not much for a best ever away career performance. And he wasnt dropped for SA after that series but was toothless there.Kumble was probably a bit more solid away from home on some unhelpful decks especially in the second half of his career. But Ashwin was, in my opinion, our best bowler in a series win in Australia and kept Smith quiet in the first two games of the series. That performance has already become strangely underrated because he's been (stupidly) dropped since then and people have wrongly tried to portray his success on that tour as some secondary support act to the pacers. Being one of the primary reasons for a win in the spinners' graveyard is a pretty massive accomplishment. It's a tough one but I'm leaning Ashwin. Maybe.
Far better is really stretching it. Kumble was great but a lot of those wickets were low impact big hauls. 6-150 type performances. Admirable but ashwin took out key wickets cheaply in the first two tests. It was a good show but 12 wickets @ 28 is not much for a best ever away career performance. I think Kumble's Australia tour in 2004 was a far better performance.
True but Kumble was facing an ATG batting lineup on roads. He did all that could be expected of any spinner. You have to see that performance in relation to how spinners fared in Australia that decade.Far better is really stretching it. This is right. From memory Kumble got plenty of late-innings declaration wickets in 2003/04Far better is really stretching it. Kumble was great but a lot of those wickets were low impact big hauls. 6-150 type performances. Admirable but ashwin took out key wickets cheaply in the first two tests.
This is true too. The Aus batting line-ups are incomparable. Ashwin against the 2003/04 lineup wouldn't have averaged 28True but Kumble was facing an ATG batting lineup on roads. In England yes they can be blamed. Ashwin is way more likely to take wickets. Jadeja plays because of his batting.Ashwin fans can attack Kohli and Bumrah for sidelining Ashwin for Jadeja but can they really blame them? Do they believe Jadeja is less likely to take wickets than Ashwin?
I will admit that he bowled well in the ICC final against NZ second innings so was surprised to see him dropped for the England series. But then the SA series happened and he looked pretty useless. Jadeja should have played there instead of him.In England yes they can be blamed. Ashwin is way more likely to take wickets. Jadeja plays because of his batting.
