This from Andy Bull in his write up for the Guardian last night.

By late Saturday morning it began to feel like England had Statler and Waldorf opening the bowling for them. Broad and Jimmy Anderson both stepped back from the attack after four overs apiece, and then spent a large part of the afternoon chasing the ball around and chuntering to each other, and everyone else, about the condition it was in.

Now I am aware that lots of people here won't remember Statler and Waldorf at all, but I did enjoy this piece, especially as England really have fielded like a bunch of muppets in this test.
I read that article, it was quite depressing, and the fact that has gone unmentioned is that Potts just isn't quick enough to be the enforcer.

Honestly, Jamie Overton is going to be called-up, for all his scatter-gun injury prone uselessness for much of the time he is fast and can bat a bit. I look forward to him having an okay debut, being called the answer and then for him to join our ever long injury-list.

Yet it's possibly a tad melodramatic based on one pitch where even Ollie Pope is scoring runs, and the very good Kiwi seamers who do have a point of difference aren't doing much. Yet hey opinion blogs have to have a big opinion for each day, must be very wearying.

I expect we'll see Jamie in the side before long, especially given the way he's being written up by the London press. But I don't think he's actually taken many wickets this season, despite bowling quite well at times. His brother's taken more wickets, but I think that was always the case. My guess is they'll both play for the test side at some stage. Maybe in a year or two post Branderson.

And yeah, the piece as a whole wasn't all that. As you say, coming up with something interesting to say each day is beyond most writers.

Would love three wickets inside the first hour of today's play, if that's not too much to ask...

I'd be very surprised if Pope and Lees luck holds for long, I'd be happy if they get through half an hour before 50% of our batting walks in.

Interesting talk from Swann and Atherton about how DRS has changed how spin bowlers are advantaged nowadays. Yet the big bats and attacking play goes against them, but definitely shows finger spinners are now a thing, even in England.

Are any Aussies having trouble with Fox Cricket recently? When I try to watch it, it says "Sorry we are unable to broadcast this programme on this channel." Had the same issue yesterday...

He's not up to it, and compton is in unbeleivable form, honestly he's 3rd of the top 3 for Kent, that doesn't seem good enough to play for England.
Yeah that’s what’s changed. I never liked the Crawley selection, but it’s one thing to take a punt on a young guy who looks nice when nobody else is making a real case. When someone is actually making CC runs it’s time to get rid.

Eek, a little pace was all this pitch had, could be attritional without, less strokes, less problems for batters.

Would like to see us string a few maidens together here. We're bowling alright, but just giving up an easy single or two every over, stops the pressure really building.

Now that Lees has stayed in long enough for us to get a good look at him, I’m not really any more convinced. He’s scoring quite slowly while seeming like he’s playing aggressively, which is never a good sign, and it’s because he’s getting very few runs outside of the big off-side drives. We’ve seen he’s not very well equipped to see off the new ball and his game when he gets in really doesn’t seem like it makes up for that.

Don't disagree really, but he's looked 10 times better than he has done before, but that's more saying how bad he looked before. Beggars can't be choosers though, and this innings has probably guaranteed he plays the series.
