No one ever does a greatest ever T20 XI, so here you go cricket webbers:

1. M. Rizwan PAK wk
2. B. Azam PAK
3. V. Kohli IND c
4. AB de Villiers SA
5. J. Buttler ENG
6. S. al Hasan BANG ar
7. S. Afridi PAK ar
8. A. Russell WI ar
9. L. Malinga SL
10. U. Gul PAK
11. S. Ajmal PAK

There's a lot of variance in the order that line up could play, also have to mention the likes of Guptill and Finch missing out, but I can't split the greatest ever T20 opening pair. The likes of Munro, Markram and Roy are unlucky to miss out as well.
Gayle should be first pick. Far too much recency bias. I'd have McCullum opening with him. AB was very mediocre in international T20s. Perhaps KP instead.

Doesn't seem right to pick Gayle and exclude de Villiers. Both T20 ATGs if you're counting franchise stuff (which isn't unreasonable for T20) but neither have the T20I record to make an all time team if you're only counting internationals. Either both make it or neither imo.

Buttler and Babar open for me if majoring on international exploits. Gayle and Buttler if giving domestic franchise comps more weighting.

Gayle scored 2 T20I 100s
ABDV really struggled.

Anyway McCullum averaged 35 in T20Is. His 100 against Tait and co was nuts. Scored as many runs as Butler in far fewer matches.

If you are talking franchise cricket his 158 made the IPL a success.

Gayle's average is too low and his SR is 137...Azam scores 20 more runs a game and strikes only slightly less at 130. Gayle is an IPL great only tbh.

Gayle unfortunately played on too long - would've affected his stats
The last time Gayle played 5 or more T20s in a year and averaged over 40 was 2012...the majority of his t20 career took place post 2012. nOt sure if all time teams are picked based on the minority of a players career.

pretty disingenuous comparison when you consider that mccullum played in 68 T20I as opener or first drop versus just just 28 for buttler who has been down the order due to the amount of firepower england have up top.

since moving to open buttler has scored 1.1k at 57 at a mad SR of 148.

Sincerest apologies. I just looked up the leading run scorers in T20Is and wrote down what I read without considering it. Of course Butler has played so often as a finisher, rather than opener.
