CW's Ranking of Opening Batsmen (Tests)

Not just because I want him to be next in line, but because in the list of top 50 batsmen he actually was next in line, and I appear to be the only person who doesn't want to render that list pointless barely a week after it was finished.

I agree.

I think that it was a bad idea to include MOBs with openers in that list.

Simpson
Perhaps, but the order of the openers within that list would be fairly set. Interestingly that order is replicated in the top 5 already voted and, with the exception of Grace, all those curently nominated are from the 11 in the list.

Hobbs
Hutton
Gavaskar
Sutcliffe
Boycott

Trumper
Simpson
Smith
Sehwag
Hayden
Greenidge

I wanted to start at 12 and said so very early in the voting. But I’m not voting for Trumper next just to maintain the order. I think he was way too high.

Not knowing much about Amiss’ career, was he just hitting his peak at this right time or did he come back into the side as an opener like he always should have been? The rest of his career was averaging under 20.

Ok, I'll push back on this a bit. Trumper is a different case to the others in this list. He averaged 39 overall but only 32 as an opener (averaged 49 batting 3 or lower). So there's actually a good argument to be made that he should be lower on a list of openers than on a list of batsmen.

Yeah, fair play. You son of a gun, you.

(All praise rescinded if you continue to vote differently to the other list :p)
