also it seems Qatar will be full of North African teams which I guess is kinda appropriate

(Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt all in the drivers' seats in their two-legged ties)
Egypt dumped out on penalties. And for whatever reason away goals still matter in Africa

So NZ has won Oceania as they should (with the Aussies in Asia). Have to beat the 4th placed team in Concaaf (looking like Costa Rica atm) in one-off match in Doha in June to go to the big dance.

Costa Rica confirmed, which is a tough enough draw. They screwed up the first part of qualifying and had to go on a long unbeaten streak to make the playoffs. Definitely beatable in a one-off game though.

I assume New Zealand are still very hard-working and functional?

Yes, although the main strategy seems to be "get it to Chris Wood" in front of goal. Actually there are some young players who play in Europe who have nice touches.

Ah. Wood is a useful striker for that kind of team, he doesn’t need particularly good service to cause problems.

Playing in Oceania might work against you. Stylistically it can be hard to go from a lot of games where you’re big favourites to playing as an underdog.

Hadn't quite realised what a horlicks the Socceroos have made of qualifying.

Assuming they manage to beat the UAE they'll have to be at the top of their game to beat Peru.

Won't pretend I know much about the Peruvians, but as they finished above Chile and Colombia they can't be any mugs.

Oh god. I had not even thought about that, kind of assumed all domestic football would stop.

It might be my untrained eye, but there doesn't seem to be a big 'avoid this one' team in pots 3 and 4. They seem pretty fair this time. Only big news is probably who gets to have Qatar as a seeded team and who has to have Germany, Netherlands and Denmark as a pot 2.
