TBF, the spinner's haven't had too bad a time of it this season. Sommerville with 16 wickets at 16. Walker with 15 wickets at 16. Rippon with 22 at a not-terrible 37. The only exception is Ajaz who's been totally inert.

But your broader point is definitely fair. We're a long way from the days when Tastle, Sodhi and Ajaz used to dominate the season-end wicket charts.

I'd say that the 2 spinners from ND and Auckland have the advantage of not having played in Spring because of the Auckland lockdown, but it hasn't made much difference to the appearance of the pitches. Although, EPOO has looked normal tbf.

I agree. We have the dumb dookaburra ball, we don't need green decks. They only prevent batsmen from learning how to construct an innings and produce bowlers who can't work a batsman out.

We will be England within 10 years if NZC continue this rubbish.

Auckland still have 2 games to go after this one.

Hell, Keane is a chance to top the wicket tally. Sommers looking good too.

And yet if people saw this wicket taken on TV, they would've never figured that fans of the reigning World Test champions could ever be getting on some kind of hype train about the young bowler within just a couple of years.

Even then he did clearly put a pure release on the white Kooka to swing it a lot when the conditions were suiting, tbf.

Is Wellington's 6 PS losses in a row a record for them?

I suspect not the overall record, ND had some stinker seasons after getting FC status in mid 1950s, and Otago had a few poor runs at various stages of their history.

Been a busy week and barely had a chance to watch any cricket but the beauty of CW is that you can read the thread to get a feel.

Firebirds not able to fly at all this season. Struggling for runs, can't get enough break throughs often enough. That said there is fair bit of positive stuff coming out of this. The likes of Robinson, Vishvaka, Greenwood have all shown good signs. Robinson in particular looks very impressive of whatever I've watched so far. Seems to play pace and spin bowling equally well. Obviously like any other player if playing in the PS early in the season on basin deck he will be asked question but I'm convinced he's in the same mold as Rachin for firebirds.

Super impressed with Simon Keene, the lad seems to make the ball talk even when it is old. Consistently picked up wickets to good balls. Watched all the dismissals barring maybe Blundell and Ravindra in the first inning every other dismissal was a good nut. Reminds me a lot of young Adam Milne run up, gather and release. Lovely wrist position, hits the deck quite hard and a very repeatable action. Doesn't seem quick or very tall but he can pick up pace over the time there's no doubt.

Elsewhere Raval has been scoring runs for fun. Remember him scoring a terrific hundred to win the last game of the last season. Is there still a chance out there for Raval comeback? He's now starting to average near 50 the last two seasons.

Great to see Ajaz grab 4 fer... I was starting to think he will give enough reasons to Stead and Kane/Tom to not pick a spinner.

Any thoughts on the CD declaration? Nice for Tom Bruce to get a 200, but they only left 108 overs for 3rd + 4th innings. I think for ND to give them a plausible 4th innings chase ND would have wanted 80+ overs, and this can't happen now.

Perhaps CD think bounce will become more variable and Toole and Ajaz will bowl ND before 2nd session drinks tomorrow, for a 220 / 60 chase?

Well, they've given up and called the match off without even starting day 4 ......

It's a moot point now, but they would've known ND were the ones still in title contention and really needing the points for an outright win, and a lot of CD's Clarksons etc. do have a really raw look to them when there's any help for the spinners.

Canterbury now need to win vs. Otago today, otherwise Auckland are the champs.

Also, Rob Walter possibly isn't one of these "hey let's all compromise the integrity of things a bit and conjure up something really fake and ghey" coaches. After all, he was batting Greg Hay at the top (with some success too) in the T20 comp.

ND have another game (their last) in 4 days time. I'll watch (with cyniscim) their efforts to make sure this goes ahead.

It might be difficult, may even have to play a few uncontracted 3rd choice players, shock horror!, (or draft in other team's uncontracted 3rd choices as per the awful prescendent already set)
