This is true but Starc did enoigh in his first over back to suggest he’d have been a real handful to the tail
yeah like i said i would've given it to starc and cummins to begin with, but i don't think it's massively anti logic to roll with a spinner here, even if they are an off spinner
Especially given it's *this* tail. Three consecutive Southees and then an Aldi Trent Boult is just begging for some loopy spin dismissals.
conversely i don't see the spinners troubling the riz but ya never know

this is my point though - don't give the nz tail spin or 130kph. hit them in the face. with these pakistani lads, same thing. kill them or break their toes.

Whatever it takes!!!
Theories are fine but when you got a 145+ kph bowler who can bowl yorkers and you are bowling to #8 or 9 in the order, you let them get first go unless its an absolute turner.

I wish Swepson had chosen to pay homage to Warne by emulating his figures from the Brisbane Ashes test in 1994, instead of his test debut against India in 1992.

'pure' tailender the key word here.

for tailenders with a good eye and no brain, you want to use the bowlers who show why they aren't batsmen - fast bowlers.

conversely spinners are quite good at forcing the classic compact defender tailender to try and hit the ball instead of perfecting the play and miss except when it's straight.
depends on the type of spinner too - even though i'm one of the biggest white fans of jadeja on this site, this is where the slower, loopier, ashwin types are more useful - because with a flatter spinner you can play them like a slow pacer

It's much easier for a batter under pressure to see off a quick bowler than a spinner. That extra bit of time creates indecision. Cummins probably rates the Pakistani tailenders (rightly or wrongly) as having good enough hand/eye to see off Starc and himself, and so has gone in with his spinners. He also probably suspects that they're more likely to have a go at a ball not on the stumps vs the spinners than vs the quicks.

just seems to highlight even more the oddity of not using Starc after tea if the plan was to unleash the spinners on the bowlers

Maybe Cummins knows Starc averages 89 in the 4th innings in the last 2 years and just doesn't think he can do the job

i am a tailender. this is not true. if in doubt, play it off the pitch or kick it if safe.

with quicks, if they deserve the name you don't get a second chance at it, you just get out.
