i should have posted this an over ago but didn't - i reckon a pure tailender would be more likely in this scenario to pop one up off the spinner than they would to get out to a frontline pacer

conversely, there comes a time where you have to be able to rely on your big sneering fast bowler to get it done, so i would have bowled starc too, but i don't think it's dumb to continue with a spinner to the tail, especially one that can get loop and over spin

well I just don't think Cummins needed to bowl in place of Starc after one over or whatever it was.

Pat will be at an IQ greater than we've ever seen if this Swepson move actually pays off

This is true but Starc did enoigh in his first over back to suggest he’d have been a real handful to the tail

Especially given it's *this* tail. Three consecutive Southees and then an Aldi Trent Boult is just begging for some loopy spin dismissals.

Swepson probably makes more sense with Rizwan off strike but Riz might do something silly

'pure' tailender the key word here.

for tailenders with a good eye and no brain, you want to use the bowlers who show why they aren't batsmen - fast bowlers.

conversely spinners are quite good at forcing the classic compact defender tailender to try and hit the ball instead of perfecting the play and miss except when it's straight.
