*Official* England in West Indies 2022

Leach has good control and consistency. Put him on turning wickets, and he'll take lots of scalps. On wickets that are flatter or more seamer-friendly, he can do a holding role. But that also relies on his batsmen and his other bowlers doing their job. England have messed him around already. Just keep playing him, Stokes and your three best quicks.
The problem is Stokes gets injured so often, and not helped by whatever Root was doing yesterday.

I don’t have an issue with Leach being our number one spinner, thinks he’s earned the right to be given a fair crack at the role with Parkinson an able deputy and played alongside Leach given the right conditions.

Fair enough difference of opinion on a player.

I think he's been by far our best Test match (edit) spin bowler since Swann, in that other than on Oz pitches he gives us control, gawd knows where we would have been in this match without him. He's not super ***y but does a job.

I mean the control might not be needed if we didn't pick injured or lesser pace bowlers, but hey that's another story.
Yeah I can;t deny he bowled decently in Antigua and certainly outperformed Permaul by a distance. I just think he's a bit metronomic tbh, I like spinners that vary their pace more and try and spin the ball. He reminds me of Jamal Warrican, who was selected ahead of Permaul for ages because he is acurate and bowls the same ball over and over. If Leach takes wickets for the rest of the series I will be the first to say I was wrong, especially if it is due to good bowling not rank bad batting like Campbell and Blackwood's dismissals.

In other news, West Indies have named the same squad for the next test. Word is that people expect Mayers to come in for Permaul. I'm not convinced, Barbados does sometime spin a decent amount. Hard to argue though as Permaul was so poor. e

In truth, had they got one wicket (and of course there was the review that was never reviewed!) then the more inexperienced WI tail would have been under increased pressure, the history of the game suggests that it was more likely that further wickets would have fallen.

I think Root got that one right.

I just don't get where Brathwaite is coming from, unless it's something contrived to fire them up or create controversy. It's such a ridiculous take. If Root says 'nah chaps, that's enough' I don't think he'd last the week in the English media. England haven't won a lot of Test matches recently, of course they're going to try to back themselves. It's just one of the dumbest cricket opinions I've ever read. No, it is the dumbest.

I think he's trying to rile the guys up because he knows that we always beat England when someone involved in English cricket does or says something stupid about us (Graves, the media etc). Because England are so average at tests nowadays even the UK media hasn't written anything derogotary about the West Indies, so there has been nothing to get angry about.

Personally I think Root was within his rights to keep going until there were about 2 overs left. It got a bit silly when he kept going with only 12 balls left, but nothing major to moan about really. I'll never criticise a team for desperately trying to win.

I don't think you even need to justify it with this tbh. The idea that a sports team not giving up until the very end is anything but exactly the right attitude is utterly bizzare.

That's a proper mental take. Root bowling Stokes into the dirt wasn't ideal but better sides have capitulated at the end. Da Silva was next in, he averages 20 odd in tests and is ordinary against spin. To shake hands with 10+ overs to go is beyond stupid.
Yeah it's a nonesense tbh. As I said, he should perhaps have called it off with 2 overs left rather than literally 5 balls, but it's not really something to make a fuss over at all.

Not sure I agree Da Silva is bad against spin tbh, I have seen a lot of him and he's pretty decent against it.

If I was picking the West Indies side I'd go,
Braithwaite
Campbell
Brooks
Bonner
Blackwood
Mayers
Da silva
Holder
Roach
Permaul
Seales

I'll be very interested to see Mahmood in action - hopefully he's better than the last Mahmood England tried. Both Overton and Woakes remaining is yuck, they fill the same role.
