Whatever it takes!!!
Seen some folks bring up MSD's defensive tactics from the 2008 BG series and compare it to what Pak tried yesterday in other forums. A few differences though -

  • MSD was trying it at a point in the game where slowing it down meant India would end up being the only team who could win, which meant Aus had that much more motivation to try and keep scoring runs
  • The tactic was to bowl on 4th and 5th stump with 8 fielders on the off, and only 2 of them in the deep, at third man and sweeper cover. This meant u needed a really good shot to pierce the ring and even then it was only a single. And no pushes or nips and tucks for singles.
  • What Pak did yesterday in like the 50th over of the game on day 1 was just basically wave the white flag. Not the same thing. There is a difference between good defensive captaincy and bad defensive captaincy and yesterday was just bad.

Finally Pakistan pacemen work out that bowling on the stumps is way to go to bowl to Lyon. Trying to buy his wicket by bowling short earlier was misguided.

i've said this before, and i'm not the first to (it's kind of a trite observation around these parts at this point) but once you've tried the initial bouncer barrage on a tailender when he just comes out, short balls are just as likely to be free runs as they are to buy a wicket - whereas if you just huck it there full and at the pegs you're probably just as likely to get them out if not more, and you are less likely to bleed runs

Starc is the mayo the extra patty the ****ers forget sometimes because theyre on minimum wage

Hazlewood is the cheese, always there, reliable.

Warner is the sesame seed bun, looks good but like he'd choke you out if you swallowed him wrong.

Head is the pickle, only real men don't remove him from the side.

Lyon is the hair of the middle aged woman in the joint. Been there way too long, but you can't help but munch it regardless.

Also yes I'm elitist, but so are the rest of the Aussie posters here. Inner city philistines. Have a go, I'll go any of you on the above points. **** it

Something about Head on a wicket like this at 5 isn't right. On a normal wicket it's fine as he's the type that can turn a 250 style score to a 400+ one, but here you need someone that can really grind a team to the dirt and that isn't Head's natural game.

Fortunately wickets like this are still pretty rare.

hah did someone actually make this comparison? MSD controlling scoring areas, while probably frustrating for conventional wisdom types, does not compare to the glorious time honoured tactic of "if i can't have fun, no one can!" pakistan used yesterday.

it's so petty when teams do this and i can't help but love it.
