Same as the Spofforth thing for me, I've been excluding 19th century cricketers as it's hard to judge them as Test players, and I think most people have been doing the same. Hence no Grace or Ranji in the batting list, and no Spofforth, Lohmann or Richardson in the bowlers (though Lohmann as we've previously discussed likely belongs in a medium-pacers list if and when we do one).

Yeah fair enough; although it didn't stop Wisden naming WG Grace in their ATG XI a few years back.

Just out of interest, are people selecting a batsman because he is primarily 'great' or because he is technically outstanding with a bunch of stats to match?

WG, Trumper etc might not be as good as modern batsman technically, but they are certainly greater than several of them combined.

I voted for Grace as the #2 batsman but the consensus seemed to be that he wasn't being considered.

It feels kinda weird voting for him now, he should have been top 10 if he was eligible really.
