Shane Warne dead at 52

First test match I ever went to was 2005 Ashes Old Trafford were he got the 600th wicket. Probably the most historic sporting moment I'll ever see. Doesn't seem real.
Ha. I was at that game. Also saw Warne at Lord's in 1993 and his final Test at Sydney in 2007. Probably some others along the way as well. Absolutely top quality player and genuinely interesting cricketer, particularly when he was discussing his craft. Massive loss to the game. I'd always just assumed he'd spend the rest of his days passing on his knowledge of the game to anyone interested in hearing it - particularly young leg-spinners.

Given Warne was named as one of the five greatest players of the 20th century (Don Bradman, Shane Warne, Garfield Sobers, Jack Hobbs, Vivian Richards), I don't think we can under-pin how much of a loss he is to the game we all love. Without a doubt, the greatest player I've ever seen live and will likely get to see.

Heartbroken. No cricketer was scarier from an opposition fan point of view. Everything was cat and mouse, even when one of our guys hit him for 4 you always felt it was part of some unknowable plan.

Then the 2005 Ashes happened, and for the first time the script got flipped and I could enjoy Warne as the underdog, the hero standing alone against insurmountable odds. His bowling on the 4th day at Trent Bridge still makes my hair stand on end whenever i watch the highlights (which is probably at least once a year). Hope someone is able to post the ball by ball TMS commentary of it on youtube some day.

As a man he was obviously a boofhead, but usually more in the roll your eyes and shake your head kinda way. Struck a fine line where it made him interesting but still likeable.

RIP the most iconic cricketer of my lifetime.

The number of women on Twitter talking about matching wi tbh him on tinder or stories about working with him and how he wouldn’t do an ad unless they had a location where he could chain smoke inside.

Was a one man army in 2005. England win that series 3-0 or 4-0 if he doesn’t play. A genuinely great all round series. If he’d jagged a ton in that game he made 90 odd it would arguably be regarded as the best ever.

I'm still in shock.

Only Shane Warne could upstage a massive natural disaster and a war. Such a giant of the game and so young.

Still finding it hard to believe, on nights and was woken by my phone going mental with messages on WhatsApp about the breaking news and couldn't get back to sleep. Going to be a long night.

He was the pantomime villain to us fans during an ashes and he loved the banter and was always brilliant. What I would give to hear him drone on about declaring or going on about hot chips when in England once more.

Simply the greatest spin bowler ever and there are so many magical moments to remember him for from Gatting to the hat trick in the ashes test, the Strauss ball, his 05 series and that spell in the World Cup semi v SA.

Gutted, God knows how you Aussies are feeling.

**** me, I’m watching the Amazon documentary now, and I’ve only just noticed Warne has heterochromia (left eye gray, right eye hazel). Can’t believe I never noticed it before.

Absolutely shocking news. Stunned by the notification this morning.

You expect Warne to still be just 'there', nowadays as a commentator or pundit banging on about something, and suddenly he's gone and you realise what a crushing void he and the weight of his entire cricket career leaves.

Feel very sad for his kids too.

Neither of my parents liked cricket. I am a first generation cricket fan. I became fond of cricket because of Warne's bowling. It seemed magical to me.

It's hard for me to wrap my head around a 52 year old former athlete dying from heart failure (?). He was never the fittest cricketer, but he was far from obese.
