Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Sonny Ramadhin has passed away aged 92. The last of the West Indian legends of his generation. The "bloody footballers" who kept him out during a drawn Test against England lead to a change in the LBW laws.

Considering the LBW law didn't change between 1937 and about 1970, probably not. And luckily Aus and SA managed to talk England into adopting the modern rule.

It was actually umpire's refusal to interpret the LBW law properly and effectively keep applying the pre-1937 rule that was the problem (despite Alec Bedser's attempts to convince them). Some umpires, like Dickie Bird, were still doing this in the eighties (why Bird does not rank as high in my estimations as many peoples').

I must admit I quoted Geoff Boycott, which is probably never a good idea. Ramadhin was highly critical of batsman hiding the bat behind the pad during that long spell against England.

I think there may have been a period where they actually used a slightly stricter interpretation in England, but IIRC it was in the mid sixties - it's in some Wisden or another. Ironically if they had their way it would actually have been easier to pad away bowlers, not harder.

There were two brothers, in the side we played yesterday, who look very similar. Middle-aged fat white guys.

The club they play for are pretty good people and they have a “Spirit of Cricket” award for each side at the end of a game.

When I got out for 34 one of the brothers, running past me, said “you took too many balls mate”. I turned around and said “Giving send offs in the spirit of cricket is it?” He ignored me. Felt it was very weird as they hadn't sledged or anything before that. And the obvious hypocrisy of it irritated me.

I don’t sledge unless someone sledges me first. So I decided when I saw him coming out to bat I was going to give him an earful.

“Here he is boys, Mr Spirit of Cricket. Patronisingly lecture us all about it and then give sendoffs eh? What the **** did I do to deserve it?”

He turned to me “What the hell are you talking about?”

“That’s right buddy. You made a mistake. You ****ing hypocrite.”

He started to advance towards me – “We gonna have to have a conversation mate?” - but the umpire called him off.

Then I realised it wasn’t the guy who gave the sendoff, it was his brother.

Oops.

Women's World Cup, SL tour of India, Aus tour of Pakistan, Ranji Trophy, Afghanistan tour of BD and ICC World Cricket League 2 will all be running simultaneously tomorrow.

This is incredibly inconsiderate to those of us who want to watch all of it.
