CW's Ranking of Spinners (Tests)

Not sure what that even means. On CW with a few exceptions like Headley and Barnes (who gets tossed out because no on knows what he bowled) longevity and number of matches is a huge factor, so I was surprised to see Jim Laker so highly rated.

Ashwin may very well be rated higher when all is said and done once his career is over. He is virtually unplayable at home and good away and improving. He isn't quite up to the Warne/Murali level because quite frankly he wasn't as universally effective as they were. And no matter how much stick they took in certain countries, their captains always persisted with Murali and Warne.

Plus I tend not to rate bowlers (players) until their careers are over. I mention Ashwin specifically, because he's the only current spinner with the body of work who's remotely close to the Warne/Murali level statistically.

We know exactly what SF Barnes bowled. It’s just that people aren’t quite sure what to make of 70 mph.
And yet, in the last decades of the Victorian era, there arose in England and then Australia bowlers who were genuinely medium pace – at a guess, bowling just above, and just below, 70mph – who imparted spin on the ball and could make it go both ways.
