I liked Maxwell, but the more I watched of him, the more I realized that he is no Kevin Pietersen as a Test batsman, not even Andrew Symonds.

He is more in the Afridi mould.

Pure ignorance. You're judging this purely on white ball cricket. When he regularly played in the Shield he was consistently one of the best few red-ball batsmen in the country and when he got the chance to play Tests he saved a game in India with a century when no one else other than Smith could make a run. Him getting dropped a few Tests later was a disgrace, and he still never got the chance to play a Test anywhere but Asia.

It's way too late and he shouldn't be picked now but if he was given half the rope a dozen other players were he'd have played 60-70 Tests and had a very different career trajectory.

And? Was he not wasted as well in Tests? He only got 7 Tests in the end unlike other hacks they've persisted with.

Bit rich to say we discuss how good/bad a player is here and then fail to understand or accept any context that goes against the narrative you want to peddle.

He certainly should've been given more than 7 tests, but I don't think he would've lasted 70 tests. Especially since pitches have gotten more spicy in the last few years.

That's my issue with your argument, when it's brought up that players with some promise have been poorly treated by the team you jump and push one case as racism only while deriding the other for just being **** despite Khawaja having played far more Tests (and at home unlike Maxwell).

The pieces are slowly coming together for Australia. They're going from a team reliant on a few top players to a solid looking eleven.

The challenge will be maintaining it for longer than a 18 month to 3 year window. Warner is 35, Khawaja 35 (man I remember him being the future of Aus batting in 2010), Lyon 34 and Smith 32. The pacemen are also nudging their early 30s.

Khawaja seems like a super bloke. Just a personality clash IMO, too outspoken maybe and Langer doesn't vibe with him. Shouldn't be a factor but when you have supremely flawed (and clearly biased) human beings like Langer in positions of power this is what happens.

i think a factor that’s gone against Khawaja was the 2019 pillow series vs India. He was the senior batsman in an otherwise really limited line up and did nothing. Rightly or wrongly (rightly tbh, he was pathetic when needed most) that went against him.

If Maxwell made back to back hundreds, there is no way he would be dropped for the next test...under any circumstances (like I said, barring some disorderly conduct directly before the test)

He's played 45 tests, been around for a decade, done a lot of interviews where he's pretty open.

Are you suggesting he is hiding a difficult personality that would outweigh his recent results?

I actually don't think Khawaja was dropped any time he shouldn't have been, and until a couple years ago was treated as good or even better than he deserved by selectors. Definitely should have played more in the last couple years (as opener) though.

The point is he barely got a chance and then was tossed aside when he could statpad at home like the rest of the batting lineup for Mitchell Marsh. Khawaja has at least played enough to fail and succeed over a number of Tests.

At least you could see why it happened, which isn't to say that the selectors and management made the right decision in hindsight overall.

Fully agree with you.

I vividly remember Warne bitched about Maxwell's test selection after the series in India and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. We are quick to write-off aggressive batsmen in test cricket.
